My bottle says 9.8% like the one in the picture, I don’t know what that means regarding vintage. Despite the overall low ratings this beer has recieved, I needed to give it a try, because Founders has yet to do me wrong. Pours cloudy orange with a white head that quickly faded to a ring and an island that resembles a bird. The nose is quite fruity with a variety of nice scents. The fruit does not smell dried like a BW it smells juicy and fresh. The taste is sweet with a hard to pin down, but quite pleasent. Quads are a tough egg to crack, and as such are difficult to rate. This beer is better than some reviews would have me believe. Another good one founders. DrD (61), Lakewood, Ohio, USA
| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Feb 2, 2007 Updated: Mar 30, 2007This brew has a complexity that must be tasted to appreciate. It’s unique. Yes, there’s a distinct raisin, plum, tobacco, oak, walnut, hay character...but there’s more...and the combination is very pleasing. This is, of course, a sipping brew--but, IMHO, it ranks with the best of ’em for a natural, mature, complex, afterglow-gifting, by-the-fire treat. ElGaucho (1730), Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Jan 27, 2007 Lovely, sweet white grape aroma with notes of alcohol. Equally loverly, watermelon red body that is slightly hazy and dark. Small, off-white head that mostly diminishes. I can tell right away from the initial mouthfeel that this brew is grossly underrated. Strong alcohol profile. As my palate adjusts, I do see that the alcohol is overly harsh and that this brew may be the lowest rated Quad I’ve had. However, that’s not saying much considering I’ve only rated 4 of them and those include Westy 12, St. Bernardus Abt. 12, Ommegang Three Philosophers and Rochefort Trappistes 10. Nevertheless there is a pleasant caramel malt aspect and a warming quality. If this beer is a 3.16 beer, it’s the best 3.16 beer on the site. A very good beer and an enjoyable one at that. Founders again makes their case for the Hall of Foam with this brew. Don’t rate this brew based on style; rate it as a beer. sersdf (1000), chicago, Illinois, USA
| 2.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 2/5 | 12/20 | Jan 26, 2007 too light to be a quad. deep redbrown. smell is a tiny bit candi aroma, but it’s mostly a barleywine. lots of alcohol. mostly malt in the aroma. unbalanced aroma. crazy powerful taste. tons of alcohol. definitely some belgian yeasty stuff going on. incredibly unbalanced with lots of oxidation. lots of flavoring hops, lots of acetic acid. definitely american, definitely no dark fruit at all. got a feeling this was an accident like the curmudgeon. i guess my biggest complaint is that it isn’t at all a quad. i’d put it probably as just a BSA. in reading others’ reviews, the banana suggestion is a very good one. | 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Jan 25, 2007 Hazy amber color with a big beige head. Aroma and flavor of alcohol, sugar and spices. Very acidic and sugary and the alcohol is not hidden at all. holdenn (1453), Chicago, Illinois, USA
| 2.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 11/20 | Jan 22, 2007 Blind Quad 07 Tasting. 12 oz bottle from drewbeerme. Pours a clear amber with a white head that diminishes to a ring around the glass. Aromas of toasted banana, yeasty banana, and banana banana. What is going on here, they must have fermented this way to high. Light body and sweet flavors candied sugars, chocolate, alcohol and you guessed it banana. A strange beer, i’m not sure what they’re doing, but it got itself a 9 out of 9 places. drewbeerme (2315), Chicago, Illinois, USA
| 2.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 4/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 10/20 | Jan 21, 2007 Updated: Jan 9, 200812oz, part of our blind "Better Know a Style: Abt/Quadrupel" tasting, pours a clear amber with creamy white head. nose has loads of banana, cloves, some cheese, and alcohol (strange nose for a quad). taste is much of the same way to much banana and cloves, with light sweetness and short finish. mouthfeel is watery and falt. i’d dub this a "hefequad". finished dead last out of 9 for the quad tasting. detroiter (958), Euphoria, Minnesota, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Jan 15, 2007 Pours a hazy light brown with less than a finger of light tan foam. Little head retention (not much more than a ring), but decent lacing. Bread, sugar, and light fruit in the aroma.
Tasty beer - caramel, toffee, brown sugar, raisin bread, bubble gum, and strong black tea flavors. A peppery citrus hopping shows up in the finish and lingers into the aftertaste. A strong alcohol presence permeates each sip, combining with brown sugar and hops in the aftertaste to lend a warming, citrus liqueur character.
Tasty beer, but definitely on the strong side. Stay away from open flames with this stuff on your breath.
