| 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 2/5 | 12/20 | Jan 21, 2009 Pitch black coloured body, fully opaque with a nice sized brown head. Aroma of hops, roasted malt, rye and a bit of nuts. Medium-bodied; Pungent hop flavour at first fading to that astringent and overpowering rye flavour. This is exactly why I don’t eat Rye bread. Aftertaste shows some mild coffee and chocolate flavours, some nuts and that god-awful rye. Overall, good if you like Rye beers and like hops...but bad otherwise! I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Merchant’s in Dearborn, Michigan on 10-July-2005 on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. golubj (1286), Sunnyvale, California, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Jan 7, 2009 Bottle, received in a trade. Black pour with lots of light brown head. Aroma is peppery bread, some sweet chocolate, light roast and sweet oats. Flavor is the same, very good blend of sweetness and dry roast / peppery bread. Soft palate. beerbill (1937), Laurel, New York, USA

Pours just about black with a moderate tan head that lasted until mid-glass and left partial lace. Very pleasant aroma of chocolate and rye. The flavor is equally nice with more rye than chocolate. The flavor reminds me of my pumpernickel bread, which I include cocoa powder in my recipe. Some mild dryness at the finish. This is a different and very enjoyable beer. Looks like porter, smells like hops, chocolate, and sweet rye bread. The flavor is awesome, like others have said here..kind of like IPA meets stout, and the flavor changes throughout the glass, some coffee, and dark bread notes, awesome smooth mouthfeel, and a crisp hop finish...my burps tasted like hops. Founders does some mind blowing things with rye. The Bomb ! thickfreakness (130), AUSTIN, Texas, USA

It pours quite a bit darker than cola brown with a tan head that fades quickly. Not much in the way of lacing.
Smells of rye and some roasted malt with just a hint of hops. I wish I had tried this a little more fresh to try and get that hop bite.
Taste is very nice for a rye beer. Spicy up front with some breadiness and plenty of coffee in the middle and then a nice hop bitterness at the end.
Medium bodied with plenty of tingly carbonation still.
A little too much rye to have more than a couple of for me but this was an enjoyable beer.

A nice, dry finish is cleaned up by the hops. Slightly bitter, but rich in roasted malt and medium-high carbonation, this beer is really excellent. Could drink a couple of these without completely exhausting the pallete.
