The cap literally popped off the bottle and foam erupted from the bottle when I cracked this one. This has happened on several occasions with Founder’s Rye beers (Red’s and Black). Appearance is black - very stout-looking. Huge fluffly off white head. Very much a well balanced IPA or possible a strong ale, in my opinion, with a dark color and rye highlights. The rye is not overpowering at all very subtley balanced. A terrific beer - I would expect nothing less from Founder’s. NobleSquirrel (1122), Chicago, Illinois, USA

| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Apr 30, 2007 Poured into a pint glass. Dark brown colour with a medium tan frothy head that starts lacing the glass near instantly. The aroma is a powerful, chocolate-coffee, roasted malts. The flavor is blended with toffee, chocolate, hints of rye, and coffee. Finishing flavour combines together with the roasted malts and earthy slight bitterness. Complex and different, very delicous brew. Lowe1983 (1029), Fairborn, Ohio, USA

Aroma is of rye, chocolate, toasted malts, a hint of coffee, toffee, and some citrus hops. Flavor starts of with the toasted malts, chocolate and hint of coffee that gives way to the more subtle tones of toffee and citrus hops. The lingering flavor is strong of the hops and rye. Very delicious brew. matta (1139), Tampa, Florida, USA

Dark Rye pours a dark crimson body and a tall tan head, lacing the inner glass from start to finish. The aroma shows some oats and a nice playing on the Rye. The use of Chocolate Malts are profound, a big dose of black coffee, and bakers chocolate. The flavor is full of chocolaty bitterness with an accompanying spicy hop character that adds a long dry citric finish. A black IPA this is indeed… as it reminds me alot of Avery’s New World porter, which was already an immense favorite of mine!
Man... Black Rye is in fact an Awesome Beer!

| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 3/5 | 17/20 | Apr 16, 2007 Pours an inpenetrable black with a creamy, dimpled tan head. The aroma is roasty and spicy. The smell almost reminds me of cola mixed with espresso. The taste is immediately biting hops, with a roasty chocolately, yet spicy aftertaste. There is no doubt that this beer is grainy, which isn’t usually a good thing, but in this case I feel it establishes a solid backbone for the rest of the flavours. The mouthfeel is a bit thin, but I don’t feel this takes away much from the awesomeness that is Founders Black Rye. From the aroma to the taste, this beer is intense, just as beer should be. The lacing though, isn’t as thick as the initial pour would suggest. Overall this brew is outstanding!
