Commercial Description:
This beer will surprise you with a big hop flavor and a toasty sweet aroma. Pours black from the chocolate and de-bitterized black rye malts. This ale is medium bodied and is well flavored with hints of toffee, nutty undertones and a dry crisp finish.

bottle. Pours a nice, dark brown with white, creamy head. Not a strong aroma, but of slighy coffee and yeast. Taste is smooth, finishing with bitterness. I would agree with blankboy that it tastes almost like a stout. A very good dark ale.

Bottle. Pours a very dark and bubbly reddish-brown with an average size diminishing off-white head. Nice aroma of roasted malt, smoke, chocolate , yeast and light hops -- smells great! Flavour’s malty with some smoke and chocolate and a long bitter finish -- almost tastes like a Stout. Medium bodied. This is very good, well done!

Pours black with an average tan head. Aroma of roastiness, chocolate, and maybe a little coffee. This doesnt really seem like a american strong ale at all, probably stout. This was sweet but still pretty good. I didnt taste much rye though.

Bottle from Bullet2urBrain. As the description states, very surprising. I was expecting more along the lines of the sweet and hoppy red’s rye, but found myself in something more like a porter with some coffee and plenty of chocolate. Very full bodied. A growing fan of Founder’s

Bottle, poured very black with dark red (wine like) around the edges with lots of off-white bubbles, thick lacing, stout fragrances from the neck of the bottle, bold fragrances of dark roasted malt and toasted malt in the glass, lots of carmel, some toffee, sweet fragrances mixed with dark candy, stout, some chocolate, smooth taste of roasted malt and toasted malt, some hop bite, touch of coffee and rye bread in there, little bitterness, this is a wonderful brew, I could drink this year round, cheers to Founders.

Pours a dark black color with a light brown head. Crisp aroma is highlighted with a slight cola twist and some coffee. Definitely hoppy, some bitter cocoa with a nice, dry finish. Not what I expected! Founders seems to have some of the better brews available, a wider distribution could spark some creative competition, of which we could only benefit!

Black beer with ruby highlights when held up to the light. Tall head of creamy tan foam. Good head retention and very nice thick lace. Chocolate, licorice, and coffee in the aroma - on the sweet side actually, but not by much. No sweetness in the flavor however, just bitter chocolate, roasted malt, and strong coffee in the finish. Rye dryness comes into play more in the aftertaste. Medium body, dry and moderately bitter. Smooth carbonation.
