This beer will surprise you with a big hop flavor and a toasty sweet aroma. Pours black from the chocolate and de-bitterized black rye malts. This ale is medium bodied and is well flavored with hints of toffee, nutty undertones and a dry crisp finish.

12 oz bottle via Ohiodad (thanks!). Pours a dark dark brown/almost black with a massive tan head that takes up 2/3 of the glass. Nice aroma with notes of Rye (of course), raisins, molasses and alcohol. Taste is fairly bitter with the rye trumping everything, although some hops (cascade?) are there in the finish and lingering aftertaste. Medium body. Very carbonated. Too much rye and too bitter, don’t really care for this one...

Pours out of the bottle like partially used motor oil. Color is very dark amber, almost black (chocolate colored), with ruby red tones. Nose reminds me of chocolate covered cherries (with liquer). Oh my this tastes so good! The initial taste is roasted caramel and some fuit. Then it becomes more sweet and chocolate-like. The finish is slightly roasted, bitter rye. The after taste reminds me of dark roast espresso. The alcohol starts to peek out more as the beer warms up some. This beer has a medium body, but the mouthfeel is rich, smooth, and almost creamy. I just love rye beers (and rye bourbon), especially if it is a Founder’s rye beer! Both the Founder’s Red Rye and Black Rye are awesome and unforgettable! I think that the black rye might even be more impressive and complex than the red rye. I’d write more, but I’m scrambling to find my car keys to get to the store to get more of this brew! 12 oz bottle, $1.79 from the Pour House Bottle Shop.

Label is a nod to AC/DC’s back in black cover so this better rock, and it does indeed rock! Rye and hops dominate with hint of tobacco and wood more than nut as claimed. Some sort of slight prune / fig / plum note. This is not as fruity as Founders great red rye but just as good. Creamy smooth rich medium body dark ale. Close to a hybrid like slabcitys stout ale.

Wow this beer is amazing. I will suggest this one when you visit Founder’s. Nice and complicated, yet familiar. It’s like tasting the ideal combination of all the best beers in the world. It’s rich, dark, creamy AND carbonated, thick AND thinnish...wheaty, malty, slightly bitter. Perfect alcohol amount.

A hazy deep red beer with a huge brown head. The aroma is sweet roasted malty with quite a lot of hops, giving it a light citrusy note. The flavor is sweet malty and both light notes of roasted malt and chocolate.

Bottled. Black brown coloured. Fluffy. Brownish head. Chocolate, sweetness, fruits, flowers and light spices in the aroma. Flavour is roasty, chocolatish, herbal and light berries. Full bodied. Light bitter and roasted end. Quite dry. Thanks to BBB63 for the trade.
