A nice, dry finish is cleaned up by the hops. Slightly bitter, but rich in roasted malt and medium-high carbonation, this beer is really excellent. Could drink a couple of these without completely exhausting the pallete. Slipstream (777), USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Aug 6, 2008 Pour is very dark with a little red around the rim, and not much head. The aroma is strong and sweet, with noticable coffee and rye, plus a little alcohol in there too. It tastes similar to a Baltic porter, with coffee and grains in the forefront. Putting a bunch of rye in there is a good move, and adds to the East European character of the brew. It is pretty dry and well-hopped. Indeed, it was so much like a glass of hopped-up brown bread that I wanted to stick a slice of ham and a pickle in my glass! Very fine. Thanks again to Adrian. Cletus (5058), Connecticut, USA

Big black pour with super thick beige tan head. Smell is cherry sweetness and charred malt. Flavor is sweet yet seemingly hoppy in the finish too. So overly carbonated however, it is hard to really detect much of anything except for the Alka-Seltzer like feeling on your tongue. Damn that soda mouthfeel - it kills everything the second it hits the tongue. lb4lb (2011), Austin, Texas, USA

Pours a nice black color but with an enormous fizzy tan head that filled well over 1/2 the glass. Not my 1st experience with a severely over carbonated Founders beer, unfortunately. Smell is roasty, yet dry and not typical roasty malt, due to the rye. Light coffee taste and rye. Mouthfeel is atrocious and distracting right off the bat. Foamy in the mouth and simply ruins the otherwise decent beer. Maybe worth trying another bottle one day. BOLTZ7555 (1107), Phoenix, Arizona, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Jun 7, 2008 Dark mahogany body that allows light to pass through just on the outermost edges. The eggshell colored head leaves minimal lacing on the outside of the glass. Aroma comes through more as it warms and exhibits bitter chocolate, roasted malts and smoke. Similar flavors and a thinner consistency than the flavor would indicate. Bitterness lingers. TPaliga (212), Munster, Indiana, USA
