Fairly dry, roasty malt flavour is quite stout like to my mind, and could use a touch more sweet malt. Medium palate (3+) is not quite thick enough for what this beer obviously wants to be but is pleasant nonetheless. A little more meat on its bones and this would be one heck of a dry rye stout. tupalev (2617), Waterloo, Ontario, Canada

Very dark brown, gigantic foaming frothy almost white chocolate head. Nice rye/bread aroma - lots of coffee roast. Creamy mouthfeel - almost like a dunkel. Tons of roast in taste, which combined with some hops makes for a nice long linger as well. Rather hoppy as well. Hard to describe, but I really liked it, another winner from Founders. Poured opaque black with a large lasting foamy beige head. Deep roast aroma, light hops, dar fruit, yeast, mushrooms, some cream. VERY bitter taste, coffee, chocolate, cola, bitter hops, prunes - long bitter finish. Slightly watery mouthfeel, sharply carbonated, astringent - nice. The yeastiness works well with the roast - excellent. porterhouse (1156), Alna, Maine, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Jul 4, 2006 (Bottle via trade with BBB63, thanks Mike!) Pours a dark, dark tobacco brown with about 2" of tan head that recedes to about 1/8". Aroma of rye grain, bread, bitter chocolate and roasted coffee. Mouthfeel rich, smooth, a little meaty, just about right. Sloppy, webby lacing. Flavor of roasted grain, rye, coffee and chocolate. Rye quality seems to deter any sweetness from the malt without making it sour. I found this pretty damned good. Has a fresh bread quality which seperates it a bit from porter/stout category. railcat1 (581), Orlando, Florida, USA

Aroma is medium sweet, coffee/roast, some chocolate, light cherry, smoke. Taste is medium sweet, rich coffee, chocolate, roast, some grapefruit, smoke, nut, cream, light rye, cherry. Creamy medium-full body, very smooth. Not sure why it isn’t considered a stout. DeppityBob (28), South Bend, Indiana, USA
| 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 3/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 19/20 | Jun 30, 2006 A dark, spicy, malty beer that’s also a good "just drinking" beer. It’s chocolaty and nutty but zesty, just a note of citrus, a bit of floral flavor, and a lot of spices (especially in the finish). Which spices? Bits of allspice, cumin, dill (!), coriander. Plus it’s astonishingly light for all its complexity. Not so heavy that one will keep you from drinking more, but still satisfying. It’s an exciting beer.
