Commercial Description:
This beer will surprise you with a big hop flavor and a toasty sweet aroma. Pours black from the chocolate and de-bitterized black rye malts. This ale is medium bodied and is well flavored with hints of toffee, nutty undertones and a dry crisp finish.

Bottled, thanks heemer77. Dark brownish ruby colour, mediumsized brown foamish bubbly head. Mainly roasted malts in aroma, same in flavour. So why is this an ale? It could as well be a porter, as I have had stuff called porter which has been crappier than this. A bit to the waterier side as for the palate, but flavour is wellfilled with roasted malts, old coffee and more roast.

Almost opaque black/brown, good creamy brown head. Toasty aroma of roasted bread. Porter-like roasted, cold coffee flavor. Sweetness and light hops in the finish, coffee in the aftertaste. Alcohol is quite hidden. Some smoked/tobacco notes but not much rye found.

Very dark with minimal head. Aroma is pretty dark, but weaker than I expected. Tons of flavor for a beer that has such a thin mouthfeel. Burnt rye, mild molasses, espresso, charcoal and dark fruit are all present and blend nicely, but fade fairly quickly.

Pour is a very dark brown with a reddish tint when held to light. Aroma has lots of hot bitterness with roasted malt. There is also so dark bitter chocolate with mild coffee and even lighter hazelnut essence. The tast has a nice roasted malt with some burnt chocolate. The beer is medium bodied and well carbonated. The finish is rater nice - very sharp bitter roasted hops. Another quaility brew from Founders.

Pours a dark-yet-transparent mahogany/brown with a staunch, khaki head that left lace in sheets. Plenty of hops in the nose, but malts make a decent appearance... grapefruit and pine well-balanced by caramel and roasts. Hops bite your tongue before creamy sweetness smooth it over. Peppery bitterness to finish. Mid-bodied and satisfying, I could drink these all day from autumn thru spring (they’d be a little heavy for a summer session-ale).

Thanks to Illinismitty for this. Huge, long lasting, light brown head that tops a dark brown brew that gives up some red highlights in strong light. Light malt aroma with nutty caramel. The flavor is well balanced with malt and light bitterness playing out to a rye bitterness in the finish. Enjoyable.

bottle - Pours black with a moderate, fading head. The aroma is of roast malts and a significant dose of hops as well. The body is moderately thick and bubbly, and the flavor is of roast malt, a bit of coffee, and rye. The finish includes some lingering hops. I thought it could have been hopped up even more, but overall it’s a quality brew.

Appears a dark brownish black with a 3 finger tan head that fades into a small head. Smell is of black grapes, plums, dark roasted malts, chocolate malt. Taste is of the same aromas. Mouthfeel is slightly thin, with roasted malt, cocoa, and plums battling it out along the palate.
