Very bitter and hoppy flavored, some black licorice. Definitely a very interesting beer. Nice job, Founders! Jvittorio4187 (255), Boardman, Ohio, USA

| 1.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 3/10 | 4/5 | 2/10 | 1/5 | 5/20 | May 29, 2007 Founder’s Black Rye, in a 12 oz brown stubby bottle with a twist off cap. Smell is slightly strong, like you know you are going to get an impact on your taste buds. Pour is very black with barely an orange tinge on the edges. The taste is extremely rude, like and impy stout or Baltic porter. The only other specialty grain I have to compare this to was also made by founder’s. However, the red rye was much more palatable than this. If you like those impy stouts or Baltic porters you better put this on your list to try. Medicinal back of the throat bitterness that just don’t quit. Think of beer filtered thru an old wet campfire or the taste of lye on the palate. Very difficult to enjoy for a lager lover. Will not buy again, but OK to try once. Somebody please get an Old Heathen to wash this down with. Rude and acrid, like an imp stout. If you are trying dark beer for the first time better stay away from this. Almost as bad as Lion Stout, Bells Expedition or Old Rasputen. No manners and very offensive.

Enormous medium tan head with lots of good lacing. Mild aroma slightly sharp and bitter, scents of chocolate malt and sweet caramel. Creamy and thick to the mouth good feel to this. Flavor resembles a light porter or sweet stout. Nice bitter hop flavor with a sharp graininess, which could be the rye. This is my first rye brew, and what a great one indeed. oldno7 (137), Spokane, Washington, USA
| 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | May 18, 2007 Pours a dark brown almost black with a thin tan head. First thing you smell is Fresh Hops ! also scents of malt, toffee and fruit. The flavor is incredibly well balanced with a creamy palate, with notes of chocolate, caramel, coffee, malts, and ginger.
