mcjay (301), Neenah, Wisconsin, USA Jan 24, 2009 Pours dark with a thin brownish tan head. Strong chocolate aroma with a hint of coffee. Taste is malty but a little bitter with a dry finish. BenDover (125), Texas, USA Jan 24, 2009 Pours a brown so dark you might as well call it black. Not much head at all. Aroma of COFFEE, COFFEE, and COFFEE. Oh, and did I mention it smells like COFFEE? But in a GOOOOOD way. Yummmmm....
Taste is coffee like (heh), not too roastey or smokey, really good. There are stouts I like better (Bell’s Kalamazoo, Dominion Oak Barrel Stout, for example) but this is right up there. cdizinno (4), Gastonia, North Carolina, USA does not count Jan 24, 2009 ON TAP!. This beer is at least 10% better on tap. I would assume due to the freshness? Only a 4.5 or less in the bottle. If you get the opportunity to try it on tap, DON’T MISS IT!! GranvilleTim (466), Granville, Illinois, USA Jan 24, 2009 The label caught my attention first. When I was served the bottle, I had to warm the bottle a bit in my hands. Some bars don’t know unfortunately. The beers aroma instantly had hints of coffee. It poured black with a creamy brown head. It tasted deliscious. I enjoyed the aftertaste of the beer as much as the beer itself. JMerritt (1313), Macomb, Illinois, USA Jan 23, 2009 Black with a thin, medium-brown head that falls to a wisp. Rich cocoa powder and coffee aroma - not a lot of roast, but instead largely dominated by the cocoa. Flavor has the roast - nice charred malt flavors with rather subtle, earthy hops. Finish returns to cocoa with light grain and wheat notes and ends bitter. Mild-to-medium carbonation, a bit thin-bodied. A nice stout, but I’m honestly surprised by the hype - this is good but not world-class, and definitely not a Top 50 beer of the world. JohnnyJ (1283), Carlsbad, California, USA Jan 23, 2009 Pours a dark black with nice creamy an head. This is actually really dry with lots of cocoa powder flavor. Creamy oats, roasted malt, cold coffee, dry bitter chocolate, and cocoa. Excellent! I expect nothing less from Founders. stankenk (130), Maplewood, Minnesota, USA Jan 23, 2009 Pours a dark think black. The nose is strong in coffee and oatmeal. The taste is very similar but the taste brings out more oatmeal qualities and the finish has more coffee qualities. MaltDawg (778), Richmond, Virginia, USA Jan 22, 2009 Sampled at 3rd Annual Richmond Industry Gathering. Big roast and coffee nose. Very dark almost black. Lots of dark roast and coffee flavor. Moderately sweet with nice lingering coffee and touch of bitterness in the finish with touch of warming. Really excellent.
