Very deep and dark color. A chocolate black with a thing tan head that quickly fades. Smells heavy with coffee. Taste like a high quality roasted coffee with some subtly and tasty chocolate flavors. You can taste the quality that when into making this beer. Fruitfly (59), , Pennsylvania, USA Sep 16, 2008 Heavy burnt nose of chocolate grain, roasted barley, and an excessive dose of coffee. The head is very fine and creamy tan. The beer is black. Full body but not as robust as expected--creamy texture but without viscosity. It isn’t bitter and it isn’t sweet: making it disappointingly balanced. Softly carbonated with a long pleasant finish. It’s a nice beer but a bit overrated. kevin62 (267), New Jersey, USA Sep 15, 2008 Had this on draft.Poured a beautiful thick black color with a small, thin tan head. The aromas were heavy roasted coffee and light chocolate.Naturally the coffee was very present in the flavor,as well as some chocolate and vanilla, with a great finish as well as some nice lacing.Well done by the folks at Founders. WakeandBake (422), Greenville, Michigan, USA Sep 14, 2008 Updated: Aug 13, 2009Bottle.Thick black pour, with a tan head. Aroma mostly of coffee, some chocolate.Flavor of coffee, chocolate, smokey toasted malt, oats, and some alcohol, Nice lacing, and a diverse range of flavors as this warms. Ultra Yummy ! sleestak (180), Williamston, Michigan, USA Sep 14, 2008 Bottled. Pours black with traces of dark, dark brown near the edge. Very little head to speak of, more like a very thin tan film. Aroma is amazing - chocolate, coffee, roast, and grain all hitting your brain simultaneously. Taste is similarly complex and perfectly balanced. Finish is a bitter and little boozier than I remember it, but it’s not unwelcome. Creamy texture with little carbonation. Amazing stuff. mattmc1973 (300), Sterling Heights, Michigan, USA Sep 14, 2008 12 oz bottle, pours jet black with small head. Aroma of coffee, coffee, and more coffee. Basically that’s it, this is a cup of coffee with alcohol in it. Taste is overwhelmingly coffee, with a touch of bitter chocolate. Mouthfeel is smooth and creamy. I love the Bourbon version of this better, because it is more varied and complex, as opposed to straight coffee. Not bad. HonkeyBra (1264), Lemont, Illinois, USA Sep 14, 2008 Pours absolutely black with a tan head. Aroma is dark chocolate, coffee. Almost smells like the inside of a coffee house. Flavor is the best cup of coffee you’ve ever had, dark chocolate, nutty, some oatmeal, some milk-sweetness. Been waiting on this for a while, and it was worth it. This is just intense, worth all the hype.
