Pours a pitch black core with thin brown edges; medium tan head with patchy, fine-bubbled lacing. Full aroma: enormous amounts of roasted coffee and chocolate. Full, velvety mouthfeel: layers upon layers of bitter chocolate and coffee beans; roasted malts, hints of dough and bread; nice balancing bitterness from what I can only guess are light, piney hops. Long, balanced, dark and milk chocolate finish, with plenty of roasted coffee threaded throughout. I’m not normally one for coffee-based stouts, but this is incredibly good and not green in the slightest. robertsreality (2460), Minnesota, USA

Hard to Get Much Other Than Coffee Roasts and Some Oats. Dry Chocolate, Dusty Malt, Oats and Coffee Roasts Come Immediately on the Tongue... a Clean Milky Mouthfeel Wraps it Up and a Roasts, Malty Aftertaste Concludes. Really a Very Nice Brew. The More You Drink, the More Enjoyable the Lactose is Complimenting with the Coffee Roasts and Malt Background. And The Oats Pop Up Here and There Making This an Incredibly Wonderful Breakfast Stout! Pours a thick, rich, dark, opaque, oily black with brown highlights. Aroma is the same as sniffing a bag of fresh coffee grounds. Oh man, this is good. Instant coffee rush followed by a bit of roasted malt. Oh, how the taste swirls around the taste buds! Dancing flavors of chocolate and a tinge of cedar emerge in the finish, but the coffee is never more than a stone’s throw away. This is a rich, rich stout that should be savored. Palate is thick, gooey, and coating. It doesn’t get much better than this. SLOB (OR ANYONE): SEND MORE MY WAY!!! 5000 (2409), Hardened Liver, Washington, USA
| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 18/20 | Dec 30, 2004 Bottle #800 pours pitch black, no light getting through this one, large light brown frothy head, with clingy lacing. Strong coffee on the nose, accompanied by heavy roasted malts and cocoa. The coffee (beans in fact) smells very fresh, even with a bit of cream & sugar! YUM! Even smells somewhat dry and chalky.   Extremely thick and viscous on the tongue, velvety smooth, with more of a hop bite than what was in the aroma. WOW, unbelievable how velvety smooth this is. Soft chocolate notes, surrounded by the hops, burnt malts, and especially the coffee beans. This was a complete treat! Big thanks goes out to TAR for sending me this one!

| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 16/20 | Dec 21, 2004 Shiny coal black with a 3 inch head of dark brown - almost red head, great lacing. Aroma is strong roasty toasty chocoloate coffee. I was blown away by the palate - super thick and creamy - I had to go look in the mirror to see if it was coating my teeth - you just know the flavors of a brew like this is going to linger around for awhile! Flavors are coffee with lightly burnt caramel, chocolate, cream, anise, hoppy bitterness. An excellent combo of flavors - yet another winning brew from Founders! aracauna (2389), Georgia, USA
| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 17/20 | May 12, 2005 Oh, yeah. I was jonesing for a good stout and this delivered. Definitely the darkest stout I’ve had in a while. The viscosity of the brew is evident from the first pour. It pours oily and seems to be flat until the bubbles gradually make it to the top and form a thin, consistent, brown head. The aroma is very roasty, with a bit of bitter black chocolate in with the coffee. The flavor is very reminiscent of coffee and there’s a bit of charcoal in there as well. It’s surprisingly dry considering the thickness. Loved it. Vac (2389), San Diego, California, USA

The aroma is sweet, roasty and creamy wtih notes of coffee and chocolate. Very nice aroma. The flavor is slightly sweet yet bitter and roasty with notes of mocha and cream and a slight sourness. Full bodied and smooth with a touch of dryness. dkachur (2374), Charlottesville, Virginia, USA
