Aroma is full of coffee and sweet chocolates. its alot smoother than the bigger stouts, chocolates are lighter, coffee is heavier, its pretty damn good, i dont know how this is in the top 50 and witch doctor is not though. I can’t say it’s coffee because I’ve never smelled coffee like this. I do smell hops. Perfectly opaque. Refreshingly large tan head, lasting. Excellent lace. After I opened this brew and read the description, I realized that perhaps I shouldn’t be drinking a rich coffee beer shortly before retiring to bed. Hopefully the alcohol from this brew and my previous brews this evening: Dark Horse Reserve Special Black Bier and Kuhnhenn Fourth Dementia, will put me to sleep. I pre-warmed this beer a little bit, and it is was immediately ready to drink. Man, is this stuff good. It blows me away that, despite the high beer prices in Michigan (read: Ann Arbor), that I can get a beer this good for "only" $2.89 a bottle. Not sure I would choose to drink this at breakfast time, but it would be good any time of day. It is really hard to find any flaws in this brew. I can see what the fuss is all about. jake65 (1725), Williston, North Dakota, USA
| 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Apr 8, 2007 As soon as I opened the bottle, my nose is filled with a rich aroma of coffee and chocolate. Roasted malt and sweetness soon emerge. The pour is a rich, dark brown with a huge tan head. Thick, creamy mouthful. The taste is coffee dominated with compliments of chocolate, hints of bitters, and roasted malt. More coffee in the lingering finish. Thanks to badbeer for sending this sweet brew! ross (1709), weddington, South Carolina, USA

Pours out a dark brown color, with a tan head. Smell is malty, cofee, chocolate, sweet oatmeal, greatness. This smells better than it tastes probably. Awesome beer. Taste is sweet, cofee, malts, chocolate. Very sweet, very nice for a night cap. Could drink this for breakfast probably, but theres no way I could make myself drink beer in the morning after the drinking that has gone on tongiht. Sean, if you want to send me some more of this, please feel free. Awesome shit man, would love some more samples. BeerPrince (1701), Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada
| 4.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 10/10 | 5/5 | 19/20 | Mar 9, 2005 Dark brown closing in on black, nice khaki head. The aroma is burting of chocalte covered espresso beans with light earthy hops and dry oatmeal. The flavour is so good, yes its dominated with coffee but is so rich, chewy and yummy. I feel like I’m chewing on espresso beans. Finish dry and asking me to keep on drinking. I love this beer. BuckeyeBoy (1696), Boise, Idaho, USA

| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | May 14, 2006 Pours a two finger, light brown head that slowly fades to a thin layer leaving a good lace. Totally black color. Light carbonation and very heavy bodied (similar to 80W oil). Strong coffee nose. Starts with bitter chocolate/burnt coffee flavor, hops and high ABV are not noticeable. Not a bad stout but could be a touch sweeter. $3.95 for a 12oz bottle from Colonial Spirits Acton, Ma.

| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 15/20 | Oct 4, 2007 Updated: Aug 25, 200812oz. bottle from mreusch. (most likely the 2006). Even upon opening the bottle, there is a big roasted coffee aroma. Pour is more or less pitch black, with a really nice looking deep tan head. Head retention is very solid, comprising of strong small bubbles. Aroma in the glass is a bit less of the coffee, and more of the malt and oatmeal. Really nice roastiness. Additionally, there is some bright hoppiness in the nose as well. The taste is big coffee flavor. I would say that the only other beer I have had that is close to this "coffeeness" is the Mikkeller Beer Geek Breakfast. The coffee taste is broken at the finish with some nice hoppiness. As I got used to the coffee, the additional complexities of this beer really started to come through. Dark chocolate comes through. Also, the oatmeal gives this a very nice mouth feel - it’s very silky and smooth. Thanks for this one, Matt - you’re a very generous guy.
