| 4.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 19/20 | Aug 13, 2009 Jet black with a small dark-brown head that sticks around a little. The aroma is pretty much all coffee with touches of sweet malt and a daaaash of chocolate. The flavor is way upfront coffee with dark chocolate notes garnished with the delicious sweet and sour malty notes we all know to be a high-gravity stout! The luscious creamy mouthfeel is just the icing on the... oatmeal! fredandboboflo (1417), East Setauket, New York, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Aug 18, 2008 Bottle. Aroma strong of coffee, quite roasted coffee, some sweet alcohol, and some sort of sweet fruit, maybe black currant? Flavor again has that roasted coffee, some hop bitterness, but mostly bitterness from a malt that becomes increasingly charred although not overbearingly so for the most part. Didn’t really get the creamy, velvety feel others did as all that charred malt finished on the dry side with a strong but particularly noteworthy body. Very nice, but not wowing after that awesome coffee aroma. Allen (1417), Switzerland

Appearance: It pours a pitch black beer with no head at all. Aroma: Extremely strong with a huge amount of an excellent coffee blend which is accompanied by basil, (chili), sage and dark chocolate. Flavor and palate: Terribly complex. A huge amount of coffee appearing. Very low carbonation. Oats showing up. Smooth. Very long, deeply pleasant finish. Overall impression: A great beer. Wonderful. Thanks a lot nearbeer- I believe this to me one of the best Imperial Stouts I have ever had- I would love to try more beers from Founders! mrkimchee (1414), Toronto, Ontario, Canada

| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 16/20 | Apr 29, 2008 12 oz. bottle - thanks to TMC for the trade; pours smooth and thick black with a chocolate head quickly fading to the edges; smooth aromas of chocolate and coffee are very dominant, but not overpowering; body is slightly thin, but plenty of rich, creamy texture; flavors are mostly milk chocolate with some roasted nuts; lots of lacing and sweet & dry finish; roasted coffee flavors come out much more in the 1/2 half of the glass as it keeps getting better and better with each sip; so tasty iwantalambic (1389), St. Louis, Missouri, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Jan 24, 2005 12 bottle: light toffee coloured, creamy foam…diminishing into a light grey film. Jet black, opaque and velvety thick body. Huge, roasted coffee aroma with a rich herbal/chlorophyll component, burnt charcoal, and tar covered pine nuts. Thick mocha palate, creamy and extra smooth. Charred vanilla beans and bitter dark chocolate milk add depth, while black espresso beans provide the backbone of a subtly complex brew. I really enjoyed the silky smooth, milky palate and the developed charred coffee, I would have enjoyed this so much more with a bit of hop bitterness or more sweet malts. tytoanderso (1387), St. Louis Park, Minnesota, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Nov 9, 2007 Bottle via trade with kryptic. Coffee dominates the aroma. Not roasted or roasting) but spent grounds and cold press. There’s some bitter chocolate and darkly roasted malt as well. Pours as deep, dark brown... almost black with a fairly long lasting reddish brown head. Lots of sticky golden/brown oily legs down the glass after a gentle swirl. The chocolate and coffee are more balanced on the palate with the chocolate hitting you first and the coffee on the backside of the palate. There’s an odd salty component that I can’t quite put my finger on. Alcohol is expertly hidden. Fairly full bodied and creamy. Finishes with a lasting bitterness. Bullit (1384), Glasgow, Scotland
