I missed the rush to try Founders imperial stout when it first came out. Man, I missed out. Full bodied stout that hits you with flavors of coffee, chocolate, and oats blended perfectly together. Drinkable, enjoyable and a masterpiece of a brew. Lou18 (1353), West Paterson, New Jersey, USA

Poured dark brown, black. Overwhelimg coffee aroma, like roasted coffee beans, with molasses as well. Taste was like a double esspreso. Full mouth feel and nice dry finish. Great. I have a friend whose 80+ grandma has smoked a pack a day since the 1940s, and who enjoys three generous bourbons every evening. I admire that kind of old lady. (My grandmas were much less adventurous in their tastes.) This beer smells like that grandma’s kitchen on a day she’s been baking. The smell of fresh brownies (recipe from a well-used red and white checked Betty Crocker cookbook) and a lot of the sort of coffee that comes in gallon tins, but a deep sense of smoke and whiskey still lingering in the walls. I like this. Less smoke in the flavor, though still present, intense melting dark chocolate and boozy green plums. Wonderfully full and soft palate. Lots of sturdy character here, if a bit less refined than some.
Cheers Grandma. JohnnyJ (1352), Carlsbad, California, USA

This is actually really dry with lots of cocoa powder flavor. Creamy oats, roasted malt, cold coffee, dry bitter chocolate, and cocoa. Excellent! I expect nothing less from Founders. fly (1333), austin, Tejas, USA
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Mar 12, 2009 Chilly weather put me in the mood to not wait any longer. Mighty chocolaty, but in an awesomely good way. Just blends with all the richness - is sweet, but the sweet is not too intense and blends with the bitterness - just a supremely cohesive beer that I drained all too quickly. I did want to savor it,but alas .. kwoeltje (1333), Manchester, Missouri, USA
| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 13/20 | Feb 5, 2006 (bottle) Pours an oily black with almost no head initially, although a light brown head forms when finished. Aroma is black coffee. Flavor is bitter black coffee. I didn’t notice much chocolate. Hops finish noticable as it warms. I love coffee, and drink it black, but I’m underwhelmed. biz82 (1328), austin, Texas, USA

The chocolate and coffee come through great and blend in well with some dark caramel and roast flavors. Very nice. Would love to try on draught. The alcohol is drowned out by the thickness of flavor. boFNjackson (1322), Portland, Oregon, USA
