This comes out of the bottle just like used motor oil out of the crankcase - nearly black and almost as thick. Head is sort of reddish- brown-black, pretty short-lived, recedes to a film. This is barely even carbonated. Only a few traces of lacing here and there. Aroma is straight strong coffee. Taste is straight strong coffee (but really high quality stuff - think I can taste the Kona!). Get a hint of nut flavor as it warms. Bit of bitter in finish. Mouthfeel is smooth and very thick, a bit syrupy. Alcohol well-hiddden. Wow this was good, but really pretty one-dimensional for flavor. Goodgrief (1161), Middletown, Delaware, USA

When I started, my favorite beers were stouts. I liked oatmeal stouts and I liked coffee. So, in my online searching of ratings, I set my eyes on Founders Breakfast Stout. It took me 2 1/2 years to get finally get my hands on one of these, but today I do. The beer definitely does not disappoint, pours dark as night with a dark 2 finger head that bubbles down to a foam layer that remains on the the top until the last sip. Lacing marks every sip and clings to the glass. The aroma is dark roasted coffee. The flavor is strong coffee, some dark roasted malts, some coffee, some oatmeal sweetness, a bit of coffee, a touch of chocolate and coffee. Some mild bitterness from the coffee balances out the sweetness almost perfectly. Thick grainy mouthfeel...like slurping the bottom of a coffee urn. Where’s the alcohol? Just great beer! Pours a viscid onyx with a dark brown head. Looks much like an imperial stout. Aroma is lots of coffee... roasted, bitter, and warming. The taste is of strong coffee and dark chocolate notes, with a touch of sweetness and a dry bitter roasted coffee finish. Considering the strength of this beer, I could not taste a drop of alcohol. It went down as smooth as a fruit beer. Another terrific stout from the midwest, and another great trade with a great RateBeerian. OKBeer (1159), Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada

Pours with a darkness of the earths deepest caverns. The head is a dark hue of khaki, think and enduring. The aroma is most obviously a huge espresso coffee likeness, but there is a vinous, tart lightly sour character to it as well; like the oily slug on the bottom of a Arabic or Turkish espresso shot. Loads of bakers chocolate, the bittering bite of chocolate covered coffee beans, highly kilned black patent barley, chocolate malts, maybe even some rye in the finish. Fairly fruity: dates, figs, raisins, some cabernet grapes… some molasses and vanilla bean ; but mostly a bold coffee and chocolate. The body is exceptional: creamy, sticky, chewy and burnt… great amount of carbonation for the style, tranquil effervescence placed but not motionless.
- I have greatly enjoyed this beer! ericandersnavy (1137), crossroads, Texas, USA
