| 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 18/20 | Feb 26, 2007 "double chocolate coffee oatmeal stout." Already, I like it. Pours black, with a very small brown head. Looks like a less heady Expedition almost. Deep aroma of coffee (a very bold "bean" smell, not a weak brewed coffee), dark chocolate, milk and sourdough toast. I taste the strong black coffee first, with a lot of chocolate and caramel swirling around as equal players. More coffee-y than any other coffee beer I’ve had yet. Finishes with a strong roast flavor and the bitterness is all black coffee, toast, nuts, and a medium acidity. It’s coffee finish, rather than hops, but perhaps the hops only emphasize the coffee. Either way, this is a great stout. Very strong on the coffee flavors, but it’s not like that’s all that’s here. I can see why not everyone would enjoy that, but I think it tastes great, and fits in with the rest of the flavor profile. hayduke (1667), Eureka, California, USA
| 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 18/20 | Nov 10, 2009 Thanks Strykzone for this superb beer. From a 12 oz bottle this poured inky black with a fat tan head that lasted a very long time and left very thick lacking rings. The nose is very rich with roasted malts giving aromas of chocolate, rip fruits and coffee. Lots of coffee. About as smooth and rich a mouthfeel as you can imagine, Flavors are dominated by the coffee, but there is still good balance leading up to a long dry bitter finish. Fantastic stuff. Huge aroma of strong espresso and expensive dark baker’s chocalate. DAMN this smells good. Deep black with a mocha colored pinky thick head. An enormous blast of coffee and choclate syrup are followed by a creamy smooth transition into a strong and firm hop bitterness. This is phenemonal. tjthresh (1779), Greenfield, Indiana, USA

Pour is opaque pitch danse black with a small brown head. Intense fresh coffee, plenty of oats, and top chocolate all through this wonderful beer. I don’t know what my problem was when I first entered my rating of this dude back in the day, but Founders Breakfast Stout is top notch.
On tap at the brewery.
Light on aroma. Some roast and chocolate. Oil black, opeaque, with brown head. Lots of chocolate and coffee flavor. Roasty as hell.Silky smooth and full bodied. It did not live up to my expectations, but it is still a damn fine beer. I would like to rerate some day. | 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 17/20 | May 16, 2005 Updated: Jan 20, 2006Much thicker pour than expected. Khaki brown colored head fizzling down on the otherwise impenetrable black beer. I pick up the snifter and I swear it’s never felt heavier. Aroma is roasted malts, burnt rye bread and strong roasted coffee. Some chocolate chips wafts jump out as well. Flavor is brown sugar oatmeal, bitter mocha java, cocoa puffs and burnt toast. Very heavy on the palate, finishing like you just took a lick from a stick of margarine. Strong coffee bitterness in the aftertaste. Oh, if I could only brew this each morning before leaving home for work.
