BBB63 (3800), La Porte, Indiana, USA Dec 8, 2004 Bottle received from Brad: (I like coffee, I like stouts, I like chocolate...so you know where this is going.) Deep and complete blackness with an initial huge creamy tan head and very good lace, settles to a small but lasting ring. The aroma is huge with a over-the-top espresso character, big ole mocha, caramelized and burnt malts, floral hops, prune, walnut, and dusty yeast esters. The taste start with a large dose of bittersweet chocolate and subdued oat/grain qualities before...you find yourself running head first into a Kona Plantation! You want coffee, you got it! This is close to an iced coffee drink. The finish does display a touch of bitters and some nutty quality. The feel is lively and refreshing for something so big, could still stand a bit more oatmeal feel. I could drink this all the time. Right up there with my all-time favorite coffee stout, it may be the best of it’s genre. YUMMY, get ya some.
bretupdegraff (64), Fishers, Indiana, USA Sep 5, 2008 Finally the infamous Breakfast stout touches my pallette.
Made this my 60th rate (couldn’t wait for 100). The aroma was strong coffee. Poured thick black with a two colored light and dark brown head - Lacing sticks to the side of the glass - mouthfeel is thick and just the right amount of carbonation - taste is coffee roast with a slight bitter bite, chocolate and oatmeal. Very nice! The aftertaste is my favorite part of the imperial stouts and this did not let me down. Creamy taste lingered forever reminding me to take another sip. this brew is full of flavors and complexity that my pallette cannot yet comprehend. I would like to compare this to the Expedition Stout to see what I like better. Definately a great brew to keep on hand - can’t wait for the Bourbon Aged to come out! taalhiker (15), , Ohio, USA Sep 2, 2008 Bottle. black with slight tan head. Aroma = Starbucks espresso. Creamy but bitter chocolate / coffee flavor. Definitely cannot tell this baby is 8+%. Great effort. Bigmmartin (208), Dayton, Ohio, USA Aug 31, 2008 Bottle. I’ve waited a long time for this beer to reappear at my local beer shop, so I had some high expectations. Well, I didn’t enjoy this beer as much I as had hoped. The aroma is straight up bitter coffee. And so is the flavor. Go ahead and brew a pot of black coffee. Let sit for 3 days. Drink. That’s Breakfast Stout for you. Very bitter black coffee taste with a hint of dark bitter chocolate, but mostly coffee beans. No I don’t love coffee, I like it, but don’t crave it. I can appreciate this beer for it’s complexity, which it is, but I still have trouble getting past the bitter coffee. 1_2many (231), Ohio, USA Aug 31, 2008 Bottle. Black with a small tan head. Straight up coffee aroma. Flavor is bitter coffee with a slight sweetness. Good mouthfeel, light carbonation, and long aftertaste. If you’re into drinking cold coffee this is for you. Nephilium (424), Ohio, USA Aug 30, 2008 Nice strong coffee aroma starts this beer off. Pours an opaque black, with just a sad ring of tan head. The flavor is where this really shines. Notes of coffee, roast, a bit of chocolate, and all with a nice full mouthfeel. About the only thing that hurts with this beer is the price for it, but it is a great stout, and I’ve tossed some in the cellar to see how it holds up.
