Commercial Description:
This Old Ale conjures up thoughts of classic sea fairing ports, there local pubs and the weathered fisherman that frequent them. In traditional style Curmudgeon is brewed with an intense focus on the malt bill creating a very strong, rich, malty characteristic and a sweetness indicative of its cousin the barleywine. We are especially proud of the balance in this beer making it deceptively smooth and drinkable at 9.8% alcohol by volume.
Editor’s Note - The 2006 bottled version has been aged in bourbon barrels.

Cloudy with the appearance of a red tinted cider, and very little carbonation or head. Slow foamy legs, high viscosity. Aroma similar to apple cider with cinnamon. Very smooth mouthfeel, with excellent aftertaste. Alcohol nicely disguised. Note of cloves in aroma and taste.

Flaske: Så fik jeg da bestemt en af dem der var lagret i bourbon fade. Ellers god duft og en flot mørkerød farve. Smagen er dog domineret af bourbon og der er ikke så meget at bakke denne smag op med. Bestemt drikbar men alt for endimensionel.

12 oz. bottle - pours brown-amber with slight off-white head; stale, mild sugar aromas; lemons and candy canes; body is clear and thin, almost juice-like; flat and syrupy; flavors of belgian candy sugars; musky, oak and fruity; smooth going down and could see being better fresh; a little thin for my liking

Pours a murky dark chestnut brown color with a slightly yellowish jaundiced looking hues with a thin beige head that quickly disappears leaving no lacing. Very earthy, swampy aroma with a little bit of creek water and old boot. Slight chocolate maltiness with subtle hops and a sweet alcohol presence which is very strong. Again, the flavor is very earthy and leathery with a strong sweet alcohol presence, leathery maltiness, subtle hops, slight chocolate, brown sugar and dirt. There’s also a strange vegetable presence with is quite unpleasant and a dirty bitter finish. This was quite a disappointment for me especially since I love pretty much everything from Founders and enjoy the occasional old ale. I will have to revisit again in the future.

Pours a clear red amber with a smallish off-white head. Smells of bourbon, coconut and perfume. Quite sweet with aromas of caramel, coconut and bourbon. Tiny alcoholic hints. Full bodied. Sticky, slightly oily mouthfeel. Stron, sweet and dry finish with a touch of alcohol warmth. Good.

bottled 3/5/09poured a dark ruby and brown in color with a thick foamy two finger light tan head that stuck around. aroma has sweet chewy caramel malt, rich dark malt, vanilla, dark sweet fruit, and some rum cake. medium mouth feel with light carbonation coats the tongue well. flavor has plenty of rich malt, vanilla, thick caramel sweetness, some earth, and a hit of alcohol at the end. i really like the flavors in this one, but the sweetness does get a little high even for a sweet lover.

Bottled at Monk’s Café Wallingatan, Stockholm. Brownish amber, almost no head. Thick caramel covered in a wealth of wood. Mid-sweet with full body and cottony soft mouthfeel. Warming and flavourful with caramel, spun sugae, oak and vanilla. Light salty finish. Well balanced, mellow and malty.

Pours out rich reddish brown. Aroma is mixture of caramel and vanilla, almost as if the beer had been aged in a charred oak cask. The nose predicts the flavor in that there is rich caramel/vanilla sweetness backed up by some earthy bitterness. I’ll definitely buy this beer again.
