Commercial Description:
This Old Ale conjures up thoughts of classic sea fairing ports, there local pubs and the weathered fisherman that frequent them. In traditional style Curmudgeon is brewed with an intense focus on the malt bill creating a very strong, rich, malty characteristic and a sweetness indicative of its cousin the barleywine. We are especially proud of the balance in this beer making it deceptively smooth and drinkable at 9.8% alcohol by volume.
Editor’s Note - The 2006 bottled version has been aged in bourbon barrels.

Floaty particulate laded hazy orangish amber concoction with an off white head. Aroma of alcohol, toffee, mild citrus, malt, yeast, caramel, tannins and mild paint thinner. Taste of alcohol, toffee, caramel, brown sugar and tannins with butter notes to boot. Alcohol warming kick in at the end.

12oz brown bottle served in a snifter. Poured a clear reddish copper with a finger of off white head. Big complex aroma of malt, oak, and some hops. Full bodied and rich. Flavors of chocolate and vanilla from the oak. A bit hoppier than an British style old ale. Long finish with more oak and chocolate. A big, rich flavored beer with a lot of different flavors going on. Nice!

malt wine it is aromatic complex enough and tastes old with a raisin flavor and full body. bready and sugarcane sweet there is vanilla in evidence. a bit of a wood flavor note the brew has a good alcohol presence and is certainly what one would look for when interested in a brew of this style. quite good.

Found it much more tame than I anticipated, very good beer that just didn’t captivate my attention like it should at the price it goes for. Amber brown body with a small vanishing head and little to no lacing. Raisin, bread, rich toffee, and red wine were found in the aroma. Medium bodied, sweet with a boozy finish. Flavor is a little more robust than the aroma. Plums, raisins, wheat toast and thick port wine. I found a slight hint of cocoa in the aftertaste along with a pleasant woody effect. Alright ale, but nothing exceptional.

12 oz. bottle. Sweet, chalky, clean, yeasty aroma features yellow raisin, brownie, carob, fudge, and Tootsie Roll scents. Pours an effervescent copper that is mostly clear despite some suspended particulate. Small to moderate amount of cream-colored head. Solid lacing. Flavors of sweet, dark fruit, cookie, biscuit, nut, and apricot. Starts malty sweet but finishes with a citrus-hoppy tang. Hoppier than I thought it would be. Medium to full body. Oily and lively in the palate. A solid if not particularly outstanding barley wine. The alcohol content and American hops make it clear that this is indeed much more a barley wine than it is an old ale.

Medium amber, slight chill haze, little head. Aroma is strongly of malt. Flavor is rich malt, caramel and toffee mixed together. Somehow the flavor works for me where the nose doesn’t. Enjoyable sipper.

Bottle at PPRBSG09. Pours a cloudy orange. Aroma of sweet malt and vegetal notes. The flavor is equally gross (although slightly mellower) but still lots of sweet sticky malt and vegetation. Not my thing at all... 5/4/6/3/12 (3.0/5)

Tap. Pour is deep amber with a small caramel colored head. Aromas of caramel, bananna, huge burbon, vanilla, and candy. Flavor is malty with warming burbon, brown sugar, vanilla, and more candy. What a treat in a bottle.
