Commercial Description:
This Old Ale conjures up thoughts of classic sea fairing ports, there local pubs and the weathered fisherman that frequent them. In traditional style Curmudgeon is brewed with an intense focus on the malt bill creating a very strong, rich, malty characteristic and a sweetness indicative of its cousin the barleywine. We are especially proud of the balance in this beer making it deceptively smooth and drinkable at 9.8% alcohol by volume.
Editor’s Note - The 2006 bottled version has been aged in bourbon barrels.

Thanks to dmac for this 12oz bottle. Aromas of molasses, vanilla with some flavors of malt, alcohol, and some caramel sweetness. Very good on a cold rainy wintery day in San Diego. Paired this with my homemade clam chowder.

Pours out hazy red orange amber with disappearing white head - looks just great. Smells fruity, sweet malty, light hops, probably some Munich malt, and maybe some German hops. The flavor is very sweet, there’s something sour here, bitterness, prunes, coffee, bitter hop finish. Mouthfeel is sweet and syrupy. Overall, a good brew, but apparently old ales aren’t my favorite style.

Pale, cloudy brown color with practically no head. I know this is the way the beer is supposed to look, but I’m taking points off anyway. Aroma of toffee, vanilla, molasses and dried fruit. The vanillin from the oak really comes through on the flavor with tons of toffee and molasses. Nice sticky mouthfeel. Sweet on the palate, but not cloying. A fantastic beer.

Bottle Courtesy of Juart. Pours a dark hazy murky brown with no head to speak of. A little rimming. Aroma is a rich sweet toffee with a decent oaky bourbon nose. A little chocolate covered fruit too. Sweet flavor. Almost an almond joy. Definite presence of the oak and bourbon with some vanilla and caramel. A nice fruity balance with all of the deep flavors. Body is rich and leaves a good aged scotch flavor.

Murky copper body; thin head. Aroma - mandarin orange, rusted pipes. Texture of wet clay, paper maché. Extremely musty old-world malt flavor. Some plum flavor. Moderate bitterness of old hops conjures up tree bark(?), chalk(?). Alcohol adds to the body but not to the flavor. Very unique; I don’t have any other beers to use as a reference point for comparison. 2 bottles over 2 weeks before I feel comfortable entering a rating. I did like this.

Dark red color with no head. Strong aroma of molasses, caramel, some idodine/sea saltiness reminiscent of Islay Scotches. Tastes delicious. Strong, sweet caramel, toasted malt and biscuit. Toffee. Light salty finish. Way underrated in my opinion.

2008 Bottle - Thanks tjthresh - Pours a dark amber with a quickly dissipating off white head...this brew needs to sit until it only has a slight chill, totally opens up...aroma is dry fruit, caramel malt..flavour is balanced, hop bitterness starts immediately and lasts, stands up to the sweetness...I think the alcohol was pretty obvious, but would mellow in an older botle, finishes sweet...good brew...
