Nice aroma of grapefruit hops, a bit of malty sweetness, and not much else. The flavor is definitely hop-dominated, bitter, with just a touch of malt for balance. Slightly bready finish. Prominent alcohol. Not bad by any means, but still a little bit disappointing - it seems to me like Founders is much better at making darker/sweeter beers. mtjoseph (36), Murderapolis, Minnesota, USA
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Apr 6, 2009 12 oz bottle. After 3 straight months of drinking Hopslam and The Maharaja, there is almost no point in rating this beer. A golden orange pour with minuscule head leads to a somewhat slightly floral aroma packed with a boozie kick. An overly malty, somewhat bitter hop characteristic follows on the palate leaving more desired to the senses. While Pliny the elder is beautiful and bright as the sun, and the previous two beers mentioned above have a wonderfully grapefruity, citrusy, yet still malty flavor that masks the alcohol, the double trouble presents a somewhat bland, dim downed variation of what makes a great DIPA. Somewhat reminiscent of imagining banging that one really hot chick. Then when you do, you find out she was just a starfish. And she gave you herpes. Alright, not that disappointing. How about crabs? | 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 18/20 | Apr 6, 2009 Lively hops and strong alcohol kick. This one give Hopslam a run for its money. Founders has another winner! wetherel (1641), Encinitas, California, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Apr 6, 2009 Bottle from pimpp. Thanks Patrick!. Pours light amber with a medium offwhite head. Mild fruity hop bitterness. Easy to drink. Not sweet and malty, but not dry either. Nice balanced IPA. Very good. Philip (436), Illinois, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Apr 6, 2009 Bottle from Sun Singer in Champaign. Pours a bright yellow hue. Assertive notes of lemon peel on the nose lead into abrasive hops with lemongrass, grapefruit, prickly pear, pineapple, and rosemary on the palate. Finish is palate cleansing. Its well done for its style, although not something I would reach for regularly. ksurkin (410), Norfolk, Virginia, USA
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Apr 5, 2009 Updated: Jun 5, 200912oz bottle from bruisin ales. pours a lighter, yellow gold with slight haze and a thin lacy head. aroma is wonderful with big, slightly sugary, grapefruit and pine hops, and a touch of herbal and grass notes. flavor was excellent as well with a huge array of hop flavors - grapefruit, orange and lemon zest, pineapple, wintergreen, and grass with a great black peppery note on the back end. slightly tangy with big bitterness on the finish and just enough malt balance to tame the hops. palate is crisp, medium bodied, and carries it 9.4% with class. overall, great brew. after4ever (2828), Brier, Washington, USA

Mildly bitter nose. Creamy medium body, slightly prickly carb. Long bitter finish. redlem (1155), Illinois, USA
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 2/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Apr 5, 2009 Clear gold color with a thin white head, very Bowie like. On the plus side--no alcohol or plastic in the aroma. It does have a pine-forest/ grapefruit aroma.
On a bad note--it had a used swimming tube aroma.
Taste is of pine-sprigs, very oily, and fairly sweet.
Overall-- Pine predominates and clings.
