| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Apr 2, 2009 12 oz bottle from Sam’s. Pours a dark black with a thin beige head. Full roasty nose, toasted malts, chocolate. Flavors start off with red fruit that isn’t that appealing, but it fades as it warms to let the chocolates and roast dominate. Bitter chocolate flavors are abundant with floral hops peeking through. The bitter and milk chocolates are really nice and the alcohol is hardly noticeable for 10%. A well done imperial stout.

Awesome. Superb. Etc. Etc.
Pours exactly as an Imperial stout should- thick, vicoous, motor-oil-looking blackness. Thin dark tan head with some decent sticking time and lacing.
Initial smell is all dark roasted malt- heavy, burnt toast smells. Also some hints of pumpernickel, dark pipe tobacco, and some vague generally woody notes.
Flavor is thick and full, with lots of roasted action, a decent amount of alcohol heat, some bitter dark chocolate. A hefty bite of bitterness with some light floral hop notes. Tastes like all the flavor of a solid imperial stout, drinks as quick and easy as a session dry irish stout. Enough booze to be nice and warming, without being overpowering. more flavor than many Impy stouts, but also lots of balance and mellowness.
Finish/palate is a bit on the acrid/sharp side, but not bad enough to really detract.
Superb Imperial Stout. KieferUGA (461), Atlanta, Georgia, USA

| 4.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 19/20 | Mar 28, 2009 bottle poured into a snifter. I scored a ton of Founders stuff up in Durham, NC last weekend and got some of this.... absolute beauty. Founders IS is like a ton of hops coated in espresso and chocolate. Huge coffee aroma exudes from this pitch black pour with a solid quarter inch tan head. The high IBU ranking (90 IBUs) makes itself known from start to finish... there is a mild hop undertone on the aroma but once the beer hits your tongue, you can feel the bitterness up front, coated with deep malts, coffee and chocolate. This beer is thick - it has a chewy body... very smooth over the palate... almost velvety. Solid finish all the way through... big malt and hop notes complement each other quite well. Simply outstanding as all Founders beers are... ajwilliams (118), , Indiana, USA
