Commercial Description:
A fine companion to end a meal or relax in front of the hearth with, this robust ale will cellar well for years. Brewed with ten varieties of malted barley this stout is extremely smooth, complex and rich in body. We recommend serving at cellar temperature. Sit back and enjoy its richness and complexity, you're about to drink the ultimate winter warmer.

Sampler from bottle. At a tasting of imperial beers, this one stands out pretty nicely. Seems to have been brewed with softened water, making a slightly tart and sour nose from the outset. A choclately dark head covers a taste that’s also smooth, with a good compromise between grains and hops. Happy alcoholic notes add to a slightly fruity finish.

Bottle courtesy of tjthresh. Thanks again for the bottle, Tom. Pours jet black with a thin, creamy, dark cocoa head that diminishes to a thin galaxy of swirling bubbles. The nose is of dark roasted malt, light coffee, faint toffee, ash and sweet fruitiness. Medium-bodied and slick with a dry, bitter-roasted finish that features a touch of alcohol at the finish. Sweet, ashy, dark roasted malt with supporting fruity and alcohol notes. This one didn’t blow me away. As a big fan of Founders brews, I found it a bit of a letdown. Perhaps I had an "off" bottle. It is a solid brew but not a great impy stout. I will definitely keep my eyes open for another bottle of this one; I think a re-rate may be in order.

12oz bottle from Badbeer. Pours thick looking jet black with a very thin, tan head. Smells of dark chocolate and roasty dark malts. Tastes dark chocolatey with a roasty malty sweetness. Very nice, solid brew. Semi-dry, full bodied, good carbonation.

6-22-08 bottle shared with lb4lb thanks to IowaHerkeye and drewbeerme
Thick black pour with a tan brown head and tiny spotted lacing. Smell is alcohol and figs and raisins up front. Flavor is nice and fruity malt and roasted nuts. So incredibly SMOOTH! One of the smoothest beers I’ve had in a while. Well balanced, no bold present alcohol. Overall, so wonderfully drinkable and feels great on the tongue.

2004 Bottle Pitch black with a slow rising dark brown head, excellent lacing and retention. Rich smell of malt, no hop presence in the nose, which I’m very pleased by. Smells of cocoa and molasses, sweet caramel beneath, dark fruits as well. Bitterness from the roasted malts greet your tongue first, followed by an almost dry cocoa flavor. Slightly roasty finish, more bitterness as well, not as good as the smell. Lighter side of medium carbonation with medium body. This was pretty good, but perhaps more age would benefit it yet. Too bad this was my only bottle.

Bottles courtesy of IowaHerkeye and drewbeerme. Thanks guys!
Pours an oily dark black with a short lived tan head. Smell is rich and roasty malt, with some creamy chocolate. Taste is roasty, semi creamy, quite chocolatey, and with an aged oxidized flavor too. Besides that part, a very good, rich and flavorful classic imperial stout. Rich body, soft carbonation and an all around solid brew that has held up pretty well still.
