Well, it finally is here. Many thanks to those who hooked me up with this deal. Let warm for 20 and pour into a Portsmouth snifter.
Yup, it’s deep dark epsresso brown with a fair wallop of viscosity. Brown sugar 1/2 finger head mellows to maple then ginger color. Lacing is good. Viscous but not gelationous.
There’s dry slate cream here. Sure, vanilla and bourbon but very understated along with woodiness. Not much alcohol to speak of but we know it’s there. Big roasted malt - no husky patent tannins. Well-refined. Creamy like coffee ice cream. Tough to find a lot of fault here.
This little concoction is insane. Sure, there’s copious oak, vanilla and bourbon. But it’s so...&*(%ing...smooth! The overabundance of this is subtle if that makes a lick of sense. Big-time creaminess. No booze to speak of but a previously unmentioned hop presence of a little grass and some big coffee roasted notes. Well-played.
Rolls, slithers and loafs down the palate. Clean? A little husky. Have another? You bet...within a couple of weeks.
Wayyy too well-constructed to be under lock and key. Have at it!

| 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 10/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Jul 4, 2009 Super aroma, bourbon boozieness was kept in check. Got 2 in a trade and believe this was a 2+ year old bottle minimum. May have smoothed outt he bourbon. Bright kicking acidity that gavet his brew super focus and reigned in the wild coco, coffee nose. Figured this would be big and sweet, but as all world class brews do this was focused, not sweet and had a super long finish. Worth it’s weight in gold! Jblauvs (544), Manchester, New Hampshire, USA
| 4.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 18/20 | Jun 30, 2009 black oily pour. coffee. mocha. bourbon. brandy . boozy. aroma is incredible. Among the greatest aromas Ive had the pleasure of smelling. mouthfeel is oily, viscous, taste is dark, chocolate, peaty, moist, intense, dank. some intense cofee notes as well, coffee bean with some milk and dark sugars. The finish lingers and is bourbon and chocolate. The bourbon is so well integrated in this. Incredible. craftycarl21 (523), South Hero, Vermont, USA
| 4.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 18/20 | Jun 30, 2009 Jet black pour, no head. Aroma is otherworldly- coffee, mocha, chocolate, vanilla, and booze- ridiculously nice. Flavor is absurd- lots of bourbon, wood, coffee and chocolate again- very boozy. Definitely a chalky element to the palate, but also quite oily. Finish is great, lots of alcohol and coffee grinds. This beer is awesome. oteyj (724), Canterbury, New Hampshire, USA
| 4.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 10/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 18/20 | Jun 30, 2009 Looks a bit like squid ink with nearly no head. Aroma is cappuccino, mocha, espresso, bitter chocolate, and heavy cream. Vanilla bourbon notes come with further immersible sniffs. Flavor is simply incredible: masterful balance of vanilla, bourbon, chocolate and creamy cocoa. Boozyness comes in near the end, but doesn’t interfere with the flavors, which retain their power throughout the quaff. Palate is thick, silky, oily, and rich. Much like a delicious chocolaty dessert. An incredible, simply masterful example of an Imperial Stout.
