Commercial Description:
A bit of backwoods pleasure without the banjo. This strong stout is brewed with a hint of coffee and vanilla then aged in oak bourbon barrels. Our process ensures that strong bourbon undertones come through in the finish in every batch we brew. We recommend decanting at room temperature and best enjoyed in a brandy snifter.

Looks a bit like squid ink with nearly no head. Aroma is cappuccino, mocha, espresso, bitter chocolate, and heavy cream. Vanilla bourbon notes come with further immersible sniffs. Flavor is simply incredible: masterful balance of vanilla, bourbon, chocolate and creamy cocoa. Boozyness comes in near the end, but doesn’t interfere with the flavors, which retain their power throughout the quaff. Palate is thick, silky, oily, and rich. Much like a delicious chocolaty dessert. An incredible, simply masterful example of an Imperial Stout.

pitch black with mild tan head. rich nose of vanilla, alcohol, roast, and oak. low carbonation, though a little higher than i expected for the style. some, but mild, crystal sweetness, then some vanilla and oak before some roastiness and some alcohol, which becomes a little much as the brew warms. mild yeasty esters, but a rather dry finish, especially for such a high alcohol beer, the attenuation might be the most impressive aspect of this beer. a good brew, but not overwhelmingly good. probably not worth the money

On tap for a very short time (about 25 minutes) at the Bavarian Lodge, Lisle, IL. for their Evening celebrating Founders Brewing Co.. Poured into a small trappist-type glass a dark black/brown with a thick dark tan foam which reduced to a bubbly layer and a modest ring of lacing. Served a bit cold so warming was a must. The aroma presented some powerful roasted espresso notes along with some baker’s chocolate. The flavor added to these some subtle cask wood and a nice smooth alcohol presense after it warmed. Excellent, full bodied Imperial Stout.

Thanks to Gypsy19 for sharing! ~Pours pitch black with small thin off white head. ~Vanilla and bourbon with choclate malt in scent. ~Bourbon is dominate in flavor. Mellowed out with some vanilla and roasted malts. ~Creamy feel when chewed, but oily when drank normally. Sweet bourbon finish. ~Bourbon overpowers this beer. Maybe better if aged in the bottle for a year to mellow out the bourbon.

Bottle. I really have not been into Imperial Stouts at all recetly, but I really really enjoyed this one. It was a perfect oil black pour with a nice dark khaki head (that needs a tall vigorous pour to stir up). The aroma was vanilla, oak, and chocolate. The flavor was the same but with a major step up. The flavor with the palate made it taste and feel like a nice rich chocolate milkshake. The abv. was hidden very well. IT got hotter as it warmed but was still very cozy and tasty. So smooth and easygoing. If you like imperial stouts you need to try this. If you don’t (like me as of recently) you still need to taste this.

12 oz bottle - Pours a totally opaque black color with tiny, quickly dissipating dark tan head. Aroma is roasty, loads of milk chocolate, ash, very faint touch of burbon, vanilla. Flavor is very roasty, lots of chewy malts, notes of coffee and vanilla, with a slightly metallic bitterness in the finish. Overall this is ok, but somewhat dissapointing.

The best. This is my favorite American Imperial Stout I located this brew in Bethlehem, PA at a local deli that specialized in predominately craft brew. Poured Dark, thick, with little head, aromas mixing into the air as I poured it gently into my glass. The aromas were rich in Bourban with hints of vanilla, coffee, and chocolate. Certainly a smell worthy of this stout. Hides the alcohol very well with a warming sensation accompanied by the smooth swallowing of this excellent craft. Possibly my favorite stout

Tap at Founders in a snifter. Bourbon and vanilla scented. Black with minimal brown head fading to a tan color. Medium-bitter and medium-heavy sweet but well balanced. Medium-heavy bodied, light carbonation, with thin feel makes for smooth travel down the throat with sweet finish. Very drinkable.
