Commercial Description:
A bit of backwoods pleasure without the banjo. This strong stout is brewed with a hint of coffee and vanilla then aged in oak bourbon barrels. Our process ensures that strong bourbon undertones come through in the finish in every batch we brew. We recommend decanting at room temperature and best enjoyed in a brandy snifter.

Thanks to ucusty for the trade! Black with a short light brown head. Smells like coffee and alcohol. The bourbon barrel accent is rather subtle. Tastes of coffee and unsweetened chocolate. Thick mouthfeel. I’m not the biggest coffee fan, but this was enjoyable. This is for the beer connoisseur that likes their beer like they like their coffee and women--tall, dark and hairy with a bit of a jab.

On tap at MBG Harvest Fest 09. Tasty, Tasty, Tasty...what else is there to say? Very dark pour, nice dark brownish tan head. Intense taste, as I have come to expect from Founders beer on tap. It was chocolaty and fruity, as well as a big coffee flavor. Great flavor.

Bottle thanks to Optigon: Poured a thick black with little to no head. Aroma was full on bourbon with dark fruit and coffee mixed in. Taste was rich chocolate and coffee with a bourbon and oak undertones.

12oz bottle courtesy of Shyam.

Pours used motor oil black with a thin, dark brown head. Leaves spotty lacing as the beer disappears. Aroma is beautiful: dark chocolate ganache, plums, dates, spiced rum, vanilla extract. Taste is intense milk chocolate, cocoa, but is overall very mellow, muted, and not overpowering. The bourbon, oak, and 11% have all faded away making this so easy to drink. Dry finish with lingering gourmet chocolates.

12oz bottle (2009) into a snifter. Rating #1300! Pours deep black with shimmering brown when held to the light. The small head is dark leather brown and dissipates quickly into a small ringlet. The aroma is honestly comprised of mostly a big dose of fresh roasted coffee. Underneath this is a small helping of nice bourbon and oak characteristics including a lot of vanilla and a touch of wood. The sweet aroma of whiskey touches through but not much. A drink taken in while inhaling starts quite sweet and flows into wood and vanilla mixed with a touch of citrus. The mid is all added coffee and this is definitely what lingers with undertones of very dark chocolate. As it warms the chocolate comes out more and more. There is a nice carbonation that mingles perfectly with the silky mouthfeel. This is honestly good but I was expecting more bourbon stout and less breakfast stout.

355 ml bottle. Black body with a thin brown head. Aroma of burnt malt, charcoal and barbeque sauce. Flavor of dry, roasted malt, roasted coffee, bitter chocolate, bourbon perfume and alcohol. Not to much bourbon flavored, and that’s a good thing.

12 oz bottle from good ol’ MrBunn. This is the last of the "monster" trade we recently pulled off. Pours a rich, deep black with minimal head. Aroma is all dark chocolate and roasty coffee beans. Taste is all coffee and STRONG, lovely vanilla. So much that I want 5 more! This is great stuff. The bourbon undertones are definitely there, but so well balanced as to make this ridiculously smooth for the ABV and style. Lovely... just, so damn lovely.

This one just hits me in all my good spots. Smooth bourbon burn....check. Coffee, vanilla, oak......check. This just has so much going on and I can’t get enough.
