I actually like this version quite a bit better than the Breakfast Stout. Everything seems more rounded and balanced and without the bitter coffee astringincy. Aroma of wet wood, coffee grounds, some bourbon, and both semisweet and milk chocolate. Pours oily black with a thin dark brown head. Flavor has lots of sweet and dry roasted malt, chocolate, some toned down coffee notes and lots of wood. Rich and creamy on the palate. Finishes quite woody and dry with a pleasant alcohol kick. Thanks again, Dan! TaktikMTL (2758), Montréal-Nord, Quebec, Canada

(Rating #1350) mvcramer (229), Arlington, Massachusetts, USA

Bourbon flavors should not be mixed with beer at this pronounced level. I enjoy a beer with the smokey, barrel-aged notes to it, but this was vile. Poorly conceived idea, if you ask me. Pours a dark black with a awesome aroma of bourbon and wood. The body is nice and thick. The taste is really earthy: a creamy whiskey taste with smoke, chocolate, coffee and bourbon. | 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Nov 17, 2007 Bottle. Super opaque dark brown with a light brown head, good lacing. A very woody barrel character to the malty smell. Very bourbony, woody taste. Roasty dryness, but pretty one dimensional. Palate is full and creamy. kujo9 (1077), North Ridgeville, Ohio, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 15/20 | Nov 12, 2007 12 oz bottle 8/17/07: Very little CO2 released upon pouring... Very thick and syrupy looking. A thing ring of bubbles forms around the top of the beer along the glass. Blackish brown liquid. The sparse head that forms is remeniscent of a Rorschach ink blot! Aromas start as burnt and acrid when chilled on the first whiff. Not quite like burnt coffee and even less pleasant; Chocolate, caramel, chocolate chip cookie dough, toasted nuts hid behind the burnt aromas, but peak out as it warms. Faint perfumey alcohol, moderate bourbon and lightly oaked wood notes. Vanilla gets stronger as it warms and I think I’ve also gotten some faint herbal hops. Flavor starts out acrid, burnt, and bitter the same as it does in the aroma, but thankfully not quite as intense. Chocolate and coffee are more evenly balanced as it warmed. Caramel, toasted malts, vanilla, light bourbon all present and accounted. Some doughy malt aftertaste. Semi dry finish, and the aftertaste is lightly bitter from grains & hops with a lightly burnt coffee flavor. Smooth, creamy texture, well hidden alcohol, fuller body, and lower level of CO2. I was not impressed by the first whiff, but as it warmed it became quite pleasing! I think this will age well if you can somehow hang onto more bottles, but nice now even when young! glkaiser (1163), Seattle, Washington, USA

Coffee and chocolate up front in the naste with nutty bourbon coming on very subltle. Slight bitter finish, but the malt dominates the whole way through.
