piscator34 (1121), Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada Aug 8, 2007 Jet black in colour with moderate carbonation. Aromas of chocolate, Frangelico (hazelnut liqueur), and a bit of fruit. Quite heavy, almost milkshake-like, in the mouth. Mild chocolate and hazelnut flavors dominate, with a bit of cold coffee and vanilla playing second fiddle. A bit of a woody element along with a prune and burnt sugar note come through right at the finish. Quite boozy, but nice. Many thanks to boutip for the bottle. bitbucket (2026), Kirkland, Washington, USA Aug 5, 2007 Bottle courtesy after4ever. The pour looks just like an Impy Stout should look, except the head is a bit thin. Big chocolate aroma, we’re talking real chocolate here, with a touch of oaky vanilla behind it. Full body and light carbonation. Sweet taste of vanilla, chocolate, oak and just a bit of coffee. Dry oak finish. Nice! hophead75 (1945), Boonton, New Jersey, USA Aug 5, 2007 12 oz bottle generously given to me by Willblake. The pour is completely black and thick, appears very syrupy. Only a small brown head appears on this beer, and quickly dissipates. Aroma: well this beer definitely means business. A thick, strong aroma filled with chocolate, roast/coffee, light notes of vanilla and a moderate bourbon-bourbon seems to get stronger as the beer is warming. Taste: Coffee, roasted grains, chocolate, bourbon, and light notes of vanilla all make appearances. The body is very full, yet relatively smooth. All flavors blend very nicely. Carbonation is soft and works very well. Finishes moderately bitter and roasty. Very complex, extremely well done. I’ve been looking forward to trying this beer for a long time and it didn’t dissapoint. Thanks Jon! after4ever (2711), Brier, Washington, USA Aug 5, 2007 12-ounce. Thanks, SecretSanta! What an awesome capper to a great Christmas of trades! Pours opaque black with thick, moussy, thin dark tan head. Deep chocolate nose with thick roast, oak, vanilla, and molasses notes. Thick, velvety, creamy body. Very soft, barely detectable carb. All the sweet chocolate, roast, oak, vanilla, and molasses come back around for the mid-palate, along with a distinct wood note. Clean, soft finish. Amazingly complex beer. ford9719 (369), Vilseck, Germany Jul 30, 2007 Bottle. Poured a very thick black color with a nice tan head. Aroma is strong of bourbon and coffe. The taste is very nice with a strong taste of bourbon and with a nice coffe finish. bikesandbeers (468), Los Angeles, California, USA Jul 29, 2007 Bartzilla’s Death Metal Beer day June 07. Shared with Bartzilla, Naven, WeeHeavySD and others. Thick black brew with brown head. Chocolate, toffee, and coffee. hits of vanilla and oak. Way fucking smoth and drinkable. I want more. POD (198), USA Jul 26, 2007 Bottles. Pitch black motor oil pour with heavy creamy brown head. Most beautiful lacing that I’ve seen from any beer to date. Aroma is cocoa powder and bourbon. Mouthfeel is thick and smooth like chocolate silk pie. Flavors are complex. I detect in order oak aged woodiness, bourbon, dark roasted coffee and slightly bitter chocolate at the finish. Finish lingers and warms for minutes. This must be drank at room temperature to be enjoyed to it’s fullest. Mine was slightly chilled to say 50 degrees at the start. As it warms the flavors explode and the cocoa bitterness mellows to one of the smoothest finishes ever. One of the best beers that I’ve had. I hope to try Founders Imperial sometime soon! I find it hard to believe that it could top this brew. JohnnyJ (1283), Carlsbad, California, USA Jul 25, 2007 Bottle many thanks to footbalm. Pours a thick black with creamy tan head. Interesting aroma of dark chocolate, coffee, roasted malt, sweet caramel, and a hint of vanilla and bourbon. Flavors of bitter dark chocolate, strong roasted coffee, bourbon, a little oak, and cream. Mouthfeel is thick and creamy. Excellent.
