jetzler (622), oklahoma city, Oklahoma, USA Jul 24, 2007 Updated: Sep 6, 2007Bottle shared with MrRomero, Pours a nice opaque black color with a light brown head. Tons of rich roasted coffee aroma, with notes of vanilla and bourbon on the nose. Like drinking warm dark chocolate with rich dark coffee blended in with just a touch of cream. Sweetness is present but not cloying at all. Really nice, a very good brew. MrRomero (1934), Nolanville, Texas, USA Jul 23, 2007 12 oz bottle: poured black with a smallish brown head. Big chocolate and coffee aroma. I didn’t notice any bourbon in the nose but it is definitely in the taste. First sip revealed just some coffee and chocolate but the next sip is where the bourbon kicked in. Big coffee with bourbon on top of that. The chocolate seems to subside with subsequent sips yielding to the coffee. Long bitter finish with warming alcohol. Good beer. WolfsBlood84 (103), Indianapolis, Indiana, USA Jul 22, 2007 Draft Sample at Brewfest - Pours a very dark brown practically black, with a fluffy brown head. Smells absolutely incredible - Coffee, vanilla, chocolate, roast, slight bourbon, and of sweetness. Flavor is also pretty fantastic, all the things described and more - a wonderful balance of sweetness and bitterness. Very creamy, with a slightly liquor-like aftertaste bite. Highly recommended if any of that sounds inticing.
"BREAKFAST IS SERVED!" dmac (1418), Toms River, New Jersey, USA Jul 19, 2007 Updated: Oct 30, 200712 oz bottle. Wow this is the best smell ever. Poured black as the night itself, thick and dense, with a lovely brown creamy head. Aroma is out of this world, my first ten ever. Notes of coffee, espresso, chocolate, vanilla, and just a hint of bourbon. Flavor is still a bit hot with lots of warming on the back of my throat that detracts me slightly from the awesome flavor in my mouth. If this mellows a little with age this will be the BEST BEER EVER! DrHomolka (725), Columbus, Ohio, USA Jul 19, 2007 Updated: Mar 27, 200812oz bottle. Pours very black with not too much brown head. Aroma is cold, day old coffee grounds. Overwhelmingly strong and one dimensional. I’m not picking up too many other aromas except for really strong coffee grounds, and not in an especially appealing way – and I love coffee. The taste is better and more complex. Thick, roasty, coffee. The coffee taste is more fresh and appetizing than the stale coffee aroma. I would really like to try more of this to get a more accurate opinion. It tasted good but was not world class in my opinion. Will reserve final judgment until I have another bottle.
Fresh 4-pack, resampled. The coffee this time was not stale, day old grounds but it still dominated the nose. I can hardly get any bourbon in the aroma (or the taste for that matter). This is not a bad beer just not that good of an example of a bourbon aged stout, especially for the price and availability. BA Blackout, BCS, and expo/double cream are all substantially better than this. TheCheeseMan (538), Saint Cloud, Florida, USA Jul 18, 2007 Updated: Jun 7, 2009Pours an almost tar like black, very little head. Aroma is as you would expect, coffee and whiskey on the front, ith a heavy roast rounding things out. Some vanilla and perhaps even a burnt orange back note. flavor is powerful and bold. Coffee and bourbon seem to be seamlessly integrated, an almost perfect balance. Good bottle. dchmela (1406), Orlando, Florida, USA Jul 16, 2007 Thanks to Boboski for the tasting. This was an absolutely wonderful beer. Pours out really black, oily with no head. Aroma is chocolate malt with a healthy nose full of bourbon and oak. Very nicely balanced taste with chocolate, oak, bourbon, and vanilla all coming through. Thick, oozing and incredible. Styles (1653), Lincoln Park, Michigan, USA Jul 16, 2007 Ticker rating as we all know how much i love coffee. Oily black, almost no carbonation whatsoever. Aroma dominated by bitter coffe grinds, no bourbon detectable. Flavor doesn’t have as much coffee as aroma suggests, but enough to turn me off. Very light bourbon through the middle, lends some much desired sweetness, helps to mellow the coffee. Just not my thing.
