mgumby10 (1844), Jupiter, Florida, USA Jul 15, 2007 Courtesy hopscotch. Thanks for sharing this highly rated brew! Pours black/brown with a small light brown head. Smells of big coffee, but the bourbon keeps in check. Really helped out the nose I thought. Some chocolate and roast in there too. The taste is pretty up front with the bourbon, the coffee is up in your grill as well. I liked the blend here. Too much coffee sometimes turns me off a little, so this was a nice balance. Finish was smooth, and the alcohol was masked pretty good I tought. Excellent. fonefan (10868), VestJylland, Denmark Jul 9, 2007 Bottle. [ Courtesy of drewbeerme ] Black color with a average creamy good lacing mostly lasting brown head. Aroma is moderate malty, roasted, burnt, dark chocolate, vanilla, light hoppy, cask wood, bourbon. Flavor is moderate sweet and light to moderate bitter with a long duration, nice balance and very harmonious. Body is full, texture is creamy and smooth, carbonation is soft. Very very nice ;o)) weeare138 (933), Collegeville, Pennsylvania, USA Jul 6, 2007 Enjoyed with grassrootsVT at 4 am after he helped me fix my toilet with a knife, a nail, and some silicon...
Appears a pitch black with a 2 finger high, tan head. Tons of lacing is left around the glass.
Smell is of coffee grounds, cocoa, fresh espresso beans, roasted nuts, creamy vanilla.
Taste is of the mentioned aromas with a huge nod to ground coffee and not enough of the oak, or bourbon going on as anticipated.
Mouthfeel is medium/full bodied, rich, huge coffee, sweet, creamy, with a grainy, biscuity feel in the swallow.
Personally, I enjoyed the regular Breakfast Stout more. Maybe it was the bottle? I’ve heard these have differed. MadIndian (987), Levittown, Pennsylvania, USA Jul 5, 2007 Sampled with Stegosaurus, courtesy of trade with Ohio Dad. Another great one from founders. Great pour, great coffee/oak/roast aroma. Roast ,wood and coffee taste. Blended rather well, Really good. Thanks guys. Jmichael (633), Asheville, North Carolina, USA Jul 5, 2007 poured into snifter. sure it is definitly good. pours a thick black motor oil glug of a consistency, with a dark caramel head. coffee overwhelms the aroma. coffeee thruout on the taste, with a sweet milky finish. palate is a milky feel, presents itself nicely. a complex beer that has a sweet finish to aftertaste... the bourbon age comes thru in the finish... good and mouthwatering. boboski (1095), Alabama, USA Jul 5, 2007 Pours totally black, thick and creamy. A few fat bubbles disperse immediately. Aroma is of very strong, deeply roasted coffee, blackened grains, dark chocolate, vanilla hints from the oak and a monstrous helping of bourbon. the alcoholic notes are so strong in this I can’t help but feel like the barrel was washed with whisky before the beer was pumped inside. The flavor is more enjoyable, with additions of pulpy coconut and milk chocolate. Sweetness is very high but somewhat offset by the heavy roastiness and coffee bitterness. Finishes chocolatey, sweet, long and very warming. The mouthfeel is very thick, chewy and smooth, but for the intense alcoholic drying. Very tasty, but too heavy on the bourbon notes for my total enjoyment. thenick (742), North Bellmore, New York, USA Jul 3, 2007 Aroma is dominated by vanilla, bourbon, and coffee notes. Pours jet-black with a long-lasting, tan head. The taste is an incredible mix of vanilla, chocolate, coffee, and bourbon....WOW is this beer complex. An amazing, amazing brew from Founders. IPAndy (120), minneapolis, Minnesota, USA Jul 1, 2007 Aroma is vanilla and bourbon, which also carries over into the flavor. The coffee makes an appearance up in the flavor as well. Not as much bourbon as I imagined, which I think is a good thing for me. Incredibly smooth for an imperial stout. Excellent.
