eaglefan538 (2351), Wilmington, Delaware, USA Jun 15, 2007 Updated: May 2, 2008Bottle courtesy Robert at statelineliquors.com. Pour was black, nice tan chocolate had, slow/delayed developing head just like a fresh Bfast Stout, a pretty pour despite the aging. The head had good retention and great lacing, nice job, Founders! The aroma got me all excited, coffee, oak, light smoke/ash, vanilla, and bourbon, but the latter didn’t overwhelm at all, just a nice beautiful coffee presence and so much other character there. Flvaor was much the same, all things melded together prefectly with a touch barrel aging, nothing dominant, a smooth treat, fabulous. Did I rate the regular breakfast stout highly enough? This stuff rocks! Thank you, my friend, Robert!!! Re-rate, September 07, bottle courtesy of nolankowal: Original rating stands, a fabulously done beer. Thanks, John! Rerate (4/08) in horizontal alongside two vintages (08 and 07) of ST Jah-va and a Peche Mortel bottle x 12oz. Finished right behind the Peche, the bourbon-notes just too strong after leading with the Peche. Still a very well done brew w/ BA’ing. The regular breakfast stout needs to stand up against Peche one day. axilla (962), New Providence, Pennsylvania, USA Jun 14, 2007 Updated: Jun 15, 2007Very smooth, thick pour. Opague black body with a dark brown head. The aroma is rich chocolate coffee, mild bourbon and brownie batter. Flavor is baker’s chocolate, rich coffee, and milk chocolate covered raisins. Finishes with a strong bourbon/perfumy hop taste with some vanilla and dryish oak hints. I had this one time before and was quite disappointed. This one made up for it. Stine (1380), St. Paul, Minnesota, USA Jun 11, 2007 Velvety, impenetrable black pour. Certainly blacker than many, proving this with an almost chestnut shaded head. Nose of a seared espresso mocha and a bourbon-soaked german chocolate cake. Initially, an offensive one-dimensional canvas of coffee grounds skirting the surface of a bourbon pool. With warmth, the malts and the barrel arrive hand in hand. Dark chocolate, sultry vanilla vapors and smoke. Smacking, soy sauce finish with a hint of wet cardboard. The astringency of the dark roast never completely gives way. Not artfully rendered, and quite bombastic without much of true substance. Age should help. Thanks Adam! bu11zeye (5430), Frisco, Texas, USA Jun 9, 2007 (Bottle) Pours an oily opaque black body with virtually no head. Powerful aroma of bourbon, oak, and dark chocolate. Flavor of bitter coffee, roasted malt, oak, and bourbon.
Way too over the top! If you enjoy sucking on bourbon soaked wood chips with your Cuban coffee...you may enjoy. Maybe I was too concerned I would get a splinter on my tongue.... Not sure how any one could finish a bottle on their own. garmonbozia (225), Hattiesburg, Mississippi, USA Jun 7, 2007 Bottle courtesy of my man sprinkle. I couldn’t detect an aroma as blunt as the Breakfast stout, but there was a hint of vanilla. The taste is 100% bourbon and vaniila, with coffee and dark chocolate.. Very low cardination with a very oily mouthfeel. as it warms you really get the bourbon flavor. Nice beer michael-pollack (2601), King of Prussia, Pennsylvania, USA Jun 7, 2007 12oz. Bottle: Aroma is very sweet. Smells malty with strong notes of chocolate, roasting, and coffee. Poured black in color with a small, dark brown head that diminished. Medium lacing. Opaque. Heavily sweet flavor. Tastes of chocolate, alcohol, roasted malts, cream, and a little bourbon. Medium to full body. Slightly sticky, kind of thin texture. Soft carbonation. Long, sweet, bourbony finish. Overall, a very good Stout. TheBeerGod (3143), Newport News, Virginia, USA Jun 2, 2007 Finally got to try a bottle of this because of hopdog. Thanks Steve! Light absorbing pitch black pour. Small tan head fades to a small ring of foam very quickly. HUGE coffee nose on this accompanied with wood, soft vanilla, chocolate and burnt brownies.. Soft alcohol notes as well. Absolutely wonderful aroma! The taste is also big coffee, but this is not too bitter. Lots of vanilla, chocolate, roasted malts, burnt brownies and alcohol notes. Softer wood and molasses. Body is thick and sticky in spots. Light alcohol warmth. Finishes with more big coffee notes, dark chocolate, roasted malts, vanilla and molasses. I could drink this forever.... leeburg (146), Juneau, Alaska, USA Jun 1, 2007 Updated: Mar 11, 2009Black motor oil pour, slight dark-brown head. Aroma of coffee, oak, chocolate, vanilla, and a bit of bourbon. Complex taste but less overpowering than the regular Breakfast Stout, in my opinion. Pudding thick, lots of flavors that follow the aroma. What a treat.
