Big coffee aroma with hints of vanilla and bourbon some light chocolate notes too. Palate is full and thick, lightly creamy w/ some nice creaminess. Flavor is nice. First a buttery bourbon and wood tate. Then the coffee & chocolates which are not that overwhelming. Later hints of vanilla and some alcohol come accross too. This stuff is very well blended mix of flavors and an absolute joy to drink.
Just got some of this again.. damn it’s good... 4.4 isn’t high enough I’m upping to a 4.7 today as this stuff is f’ing great. Snojerk321 (1962), San Diego, California, USA

So much coffee on the nose, with its black pour and Starbuck’s goodness. A small, deep chocolate head rounded things out. Terminus (1955), Las Cruces, New Mexico, USA
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | May 1, 2006 Updated: Oct 15, 200612oz bottle-thanks to vyvvy for hooking me up with a sample of this rare one. pours pitch black with a soaphy tan head. very nice swirly appearance to the head. thick and viscous with some decent legs along the rim of the glass. HUGE coffee on initial nose with the bourbon right behind it. the aroma is actually well balanced for a barrel aged beer. the chocolate, char, coffee from regular breakfast stout come through strong here. flavors however, are mostly due to the bourbon barrel-vanilla, chocolate, char, roast, anise, cut wood, and chocolate covered cherries. big alcohol note on the finish. becomes somewhat tiresome as i finish the sample. very solid bourbon stout, but not something i would have repeated samples of. fordest (1954), Santee/San Diego, California, USA
| 4.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 10/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 19/20 | Apr 25, 2006 12 oz bottle huge thanks to Kramer17801. Very dark pour with minimal head. Faded to a ring with an island of bubbles in the middle of the glass. Aromas were coming off before I even bent to take a whiff. Lots of coffee. Bourbon there too. Chocolate and roastiness. More Coffee. Flavors were good too. Initially very sweet. Chocolate and Roasted Malts. Then it gets bitter like slightly sweetened coffee. Bourbon notes carried all the way through. Alcohol is pretty well hidden. Just a trace in the finish. Wow, good stuff. Jason, Thanks a million! hophead75 (1954), Boonton, New Jersey, USA
| 4.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 18/20 | Aug 5, 2007 12 oz bottle generously given to me by Willblake. The pour is completely black and thick, appears very syrupy. Only a small brown head appears on this beer, and quickly dissipates. Aroma: well this beer definitely means business. A thick, strong aroma filled with chocolate, roast/coffee, light notes of vanilla and a moderate bourbon-bourbon seems to get stronger as the beer is warming. Taste: Coffee, roasted grains, chocolate, bourbon, and light notes of vanilla all make appearances. The body is very full, yet relatively smooth. All flavors blend very nicely. Carbonation is soft and works very well. Finishes moderately bitter and roasty. Very complex, extremely well done. I’ve been looking forward to trying this beer for a long time and it didn’t dissapoint. Thanks Jon! beerbill (1953), Laurel, New York, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Feb 24, 2008 12 oz. bottle courtesy of a trade with Photekut. Pours black with a moderate chocolate brown head that completely disppears by mid-glass. Lots of coffee in the aroma with notes of bourbon and chocolate as well. More bourbon is detected in the flavor with coffee, dark chocolate, vanilla and roasted malt also present. Some bitterness from the coffee kicks in after a few seconds and lingers into the swallow. Full bodied with a definite alcohol presence. There’s no disguising that this is high octane. A very good beer to start off a Sunday morning! scraff (1942), Baltimore, Maryland, USA
| 4.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 10/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Jul 28, 2006 Dense black, creamy swirling tan head. Intense rich nose of used espresso grounds and black chocolate that float on a soft wave of caramel, burnt ashy wood, vanilla, and a faint bourbonesque tone. The flavor is just as nice and generally mirrors the aroma. The barrel is expertly used here for complementing, not overwhelming. Full bodied, soft carbonation, bittersweet finish. Fan-f’in-tastic! Thanks for saving me a bottle Hopscotch... MrRomero (1934), Nolanville, Texas, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Jul 23, 2007 12 oz bottle: poured black with a smallish brown head. Big chocolate and coffee aroma. I didn’t notice any bourbon in the nose but it is definitely in the taste. First sip revealed just some coffee and chocolate but the next sip is where the bourbon kicked in. Big coffee with bourbon on top of that. The chocolate seems to subside with subsequent sips yielding to the coffee. Long bitter finish with warming alcohol. Good beer.
