| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 17/20 | Apr 25, 2008 Bottle, thanks to brentfeesh. Pours ink black with small dark tan head. The aroma is unapologetic bourbon at first, enough to burn my sinuses; after a few sniffs I then get strong coffee and fudge notes, with some weaker undertones of vanilla, raisin, and tobacco. The flavor is strong oak, bourbon, and coffee. Not subtle at all. There is a little bit of raisin and plum fruitiness, and then the same cigar tobacco note I got in the nose. A little bit of vanilla peeks through with a little bit of piney bitterness toward the end, and the finish is of bitter chocolate. Over the top, but very good. ABUSEDGOAT (1934), California, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | May 18, 2006 Thx to px2grafx. Poured a dark oily body with a small tan head. Minimal lacing on the glass. Initial aroma was a blast of bourbon. Coffee, chocolate, vanilla and oak were all here. The bourbon influence was a little overdone, but it was still very enjoyable. Never woulda guessed 10% ABV. Didn’t know what to expect after the Breakfast Stout, but this was hella better. The coffee has been muted, so perhaps it was good to have all that bourbon flavor. | 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Jul 23, 2007 12 oz bottle: poured black with a smallish brown head. Big chocolate and coffee aroma. I didn’t notice any bourbon in the nose but it is definitely in the taste. First sip revealed just some coffee and chocolate but the next sip is where the bourbon kicked in. Big coffee with bourbon on top of that. The chocolate seems to subside with subsequent sips yielding to the coffee. Long bitter finish with warming alcohol. Good beer. | 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Mar 23, 2006 Thick, muddy chocolate brown pour, opaque indeed, with a light tan sawdust spectacular forming a partial oily layer as the head, along with a thin galaxy wrung along the outskirts of the snifter. Dark chocolate, espresso, alcohol and bourbon are front and aromatically centered. Singed oak casks, Tollhouse morsels, milky vanilla crème, and dark chocolate devouring hot, peppered caramel nougats. Consequential wafts bridge the nose to mouth - brown sugar-saturated cookie dough, black malts and cinder being the most prolific.
Thick, heavy, waxy, oily wonder. When the palate delight is able to be pushed to the side for a moment, we’re in the midst of bourbon, French roast espresso grinds, caramel and Madagascar vanilla seeping into flame scorched oak. The hot alcohol tosses off the tongue. Vibrant bakers chocolate echoes all around us, spurring Dove dark chocolates in ample supply. A smite burn furrows on the undersides of the tongue. Mild carbonation and a little hot, and if there’s the patience and supply, it’ll age beautifully. Finish is amped-up with double strength greasy espresso drippings onto a pool of bourbon, ash and dark, unrefined chocolate. Bless this barrel-aged beer. AmEricanbrew (1929), orange, California, USA
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Mar 24, 2009 Ink black with a light brown head. Deep, rich dry chocolate aroma with vanilla and wood. Smooth medium/full body with soft carbonation. Great black roasted malt flavors with tobacco and sweet n’ boozy wood and vanilla. Very freaking good. Thanks to Brad for this bottle. | 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 17/20 | Aug 28, 2006 I was psyched to see this. A black appearance with a beige head. The aroma is whiskey and coffee. Or smells like Jim Morrisons breakfast. The body is a little lighter than I expected. The bitter and sweet balance out fairly well with chocolate and coffee present. The whiskey is always making its presence known. Good one!
