Pours thick, black and opaque with a thin tannish head that leaves a trace of lace. Bold roasty coffee aroma, a bit of charcoal initially with boubon undertones. Flavor features more coffee, bitter chocolate, rich bourbon and vanilla, tannic notes, alcohol nicely balanced with sweet, tart and astringent flavors, then a slight puckery aftertaste. Full body, very smooth - like liquid silk - and rich creamy carbonation. A real treat. RAYBOY01 (1830), Chicago, Illinois, USA
| 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Oct 6, 2006 What a joy, after so many mediocre to average beers I’ve been drinking lately, to retry this spectacular brew. Perfect pour---black and huge brown rocky head. The nose alone would be enough to satisfy most coffee fanatics. The flavors of coffee, espresso, chocolate, molasses, brown sugar and toffee intermingle subtly. The bourbon tastes are also subtle and incredibly well integrated. Top of the line...it doesn’t get any better than this. AmEricanbrew (1828), bankrupt socialistwelfare state, Washington DC, USA
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Mar 24, 2009 Ink black with a light brown head. Deep, rich dry chocolate aroma with vanilla and wood. Smooth medium/full body with soft carbonation. Great black roasted malt flavors with tobacco and sweet n’ boozy wood and vanilla. Very freaking good. Thanks to Brad for this bottle. | 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Sep 12, 2007 Pours a slick viscous body. Minimal head that disappears quickly and no carbonation. Lies lifeless in the glass. But wait, there is life. A pungent aroma slowly climbs out of the glass and wafts across the room. Rich and powerful. Roasted malts, strong bitter coffee, light alcoolic notes and raisins. Color is black with a light crimson ring around the top in a strong light. Strong and flavorful. Lots of coffee and roasted grains hit you up front. Light alcohol presence is masked in all of the flavor. Brown sugar, molasses and carbon mixes in mid swallow. Burbon is present in just a touch and melds very well with the other flavors. Finishes a little dry and bitter. Big and powerful brew but amazingly easy drinking. A top notch impy. | 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Mar 16, 2006 Oatmealy sweet, and with more coffee than some of its comrades such as the Central Waters Reserve. Great body, swirly head, very nice presentation. And great coffee and sweetness in the aroma, with very little bourbon intially. The flavors are like a coffee stout, like an oatmeal stout, and like a bourbon stout. Very good. But towards the end, upon full warming, there is a thinning and a rise of the bourbon that sstarts to drown out the rest and it beomes less interesting. Others will probably like that, but here the sweetness didn’t work with the slight thinning and the big bourbon. Just not handled as classically as in the Central Waters though still very nice. | 4.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 19/20 | Apr 13, 2006 Updated: Nov 12, 2007Founders is the Quiet Brewery. No fanfare, no cult classics, just good beer pretty much across the board. This was another noteworthy offering. Starting with the uncharacteristically witty notes on the label this was a great experience. It pours out a thick black with a cocoa-colored head of modest proportions. Aroma of coffee mingles with vanilla, baker’s chocolate, oak, coconut, and bourbon. Medium to full bodied and a smooth texture that lacked a bit of thickness. The flavor was rich and deep, well-representing the array of aromas that began the tasting process. The coffee, chocolate, and bourbon blend nicely in the taste. While not as extraordinary as their Breakfast Stout, this was an awesome drink. 11026 (1799), Alabama, USA
| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 18/20 | Jun 29, 2006 Bottle from Pailhead and qdog. Thanks go out to both of you. Black colored with no real head formation. A smattering of lacing. Aroma is full of coffee, chocolate, some bourbon notes of vanilla and tannins however these do not dominate. Full bodied. Overly viscous, wonderful mouthfeel for an IS. Flavor is full of roasted grains and chocolate. Again, coffee and oatmeal seem to overwhelm the bourbon aspect of this beer. Nicely done and worthy of respect. Beer2000 (1798), Kristiansand, Norway
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Oct 17, 2009 355 ml bottle. Black body with a thin brown head. Aroma of burnt malt, charcoal and barbeque sauce. Flavor of dry, roasted malt, roasted coffee, bitter chocolate, bourbon perfume and alcohol. Not to much bourbon flavored, and that’s a good thing.
