Four beers with similar characteristics will be sampled in each round. Round 1 - Bourbon Barrel. 12 oz bottle. Dark chocolate brown with a wisp and thin ring of tan head. Intoxicating nose of oak, bourbon and dusty dark chocolate; fruitcake and currants emerge. Silky sipper with bourbon and Baker’s chocolate. Lime peel tingle. Notes of coffee with cinnamon stick. Beet sweetness. SamGamgee (1469), Santa Cruz (La Selva), California, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Aug 24, 2009 12oz bottle thanks to bret27. Black with a tan head. The aroma has dominating coffee, mixed with plenty of oak and alcohol. Hot flavor with a little bourbon, wood, and coffee. Medium-full body with some tannic, woody astringency and alcohol burn in the finish. A blast of flavor, with a cool mix of coffee and bourbon that works a little better than in the aroma. The mouthfeel definitely brings it down though, with too much astringency and alcohol. This is one that I can see liking a lot better with a good deal of age on it to soften things. dchmela (1466), Orlando, Florida, USA
| 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Jul 16, 2007 Thanks to Boboski for the tasting. This was an absolutely wonderful beer. Pours out really black, oily with no head. Aroma is chocolate malt with a healthy nose full of bourbon and oak. Very nicely balanced taste with chocolate, oak, bourbon, and vanilla all coming through. Thick, oozing and incredible. holdenn (1453), Chicago, Illinois, USA
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Apr 12, 2007 Updated: Apr 17, 200912 oz bottle sampled thanks to drewbeerme. The elusive brew, I missed it at West Lakeview and on my travels to another shop my car broke down. Certainly I thought God did not destin me to drink this, but alas andrew comes through. Thick black in appearance with a tan ring of a head. The aroma is not dominated by bourbon as I though but mostly, toffee and coffee. Chocolate and stale cigarettes come through as well with surpisingly no bourbon in the nose. Creamy and a medium full body. Toffee, chocolate, coffee are the strong flavors with some light bourbon undertones that barely come through and complement it pretty well. I’m surprised how balanced and drinkable this is for a bourbon imperial especially at such a young age. Well done founders, just make more of it next time. 8/4/9/4/17 =4.2
I wish I dated this but its a year or two old. Pours a dark black with a beige ring of a head. Nose is bourbon all over. Alcohol with a touch of ashy malt and dark fruits. Syruppy body. Alcohol, roasted malts that have that ashiness. The alcohol and ash is a little much here, but a dose of roasty bitterness provides some relief before the finish. Still decent, but I’ll drink mine fresh here on out. 8/4/7/4/15 = 3.8 Jokes (1453), Chicago, Illinois, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | May 3, 2006 Bottle. Deep, thick black with a small, brown ring of small bubbles. Big aroma of coffee, bourbon, cocoa, vanilla, caramel, coconut, fusel alcohol and tons of burnt toast. The body is big and thick on the tongue, easily coating and with carbonation to alleviate the weight. Sweet and bourbony, the flavor is reminiscent of many barrel-aged stouts. The bourbon barrels have a big affect on the flavors and really add a lot sweetness, vanilla and alcohol. The coffee starts to smell old and stale, not really appealing at all. It’s not bad, but it doesn’t begin to compare with the non-barrel aged version or other bourbon-barrel aged stouts. robinvboyer (1444), Sturgeon Falls, Ontario, Canada

pours JET black, small brown/beige head. excellent lacing on the glass. man i love this bourbon aged stouts!
aroma is chocolate, coffee, and i’m just loving that vanilla! mouthfell is thick and smooth, like velvet. flavour is again, lots of chocolate, and the vanilla comes through bigtime, with a wicked coffee aftertaste, and some lovely bittering. Alcohol is slightly present in the aroma and flavour but not enough to detract from the beer overall. outstanding beer! adrian910ss (1436), philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA
| 4.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 20/20 | Apr 11, 2007 Pours a thick black motor oil color with a small brown head. Complex aroma of roasted coffee beans, rich chocolate, vanilla cream and bourbon. Taste is a very rich combination of roasted coffee beans and chocolate with vanilla bourbon hints. Very nicely done and the bourbon flavor is not overdone which makes it pleasurable to sip.
