| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Apr 14, 2007 Nutty caramel whiskeyish strong coffe aroma. Bid amber head, very dark color. Flavor is really more of the same although the alcohol seems more pronounced and a bit of oak comes through. Texture is oily and full bodied. I must say that I didn’t think this one lived up to the hype although it is still a very fine beer. barleyPops (1079), Quad-Cities, Illinois, USA

this is my kind of beer! nose of bourbon, vanilla, oak and coffee. pour is pitch black with a dark tan head. flavor is so well balanced and blended, coffee, mild chocolate, bourbon, vanilla oak and maybe even a hint of cherry. smooth as silk on the tongue with little carbonation. the alcohol is nowhere to be found on the tongue but only after several sips as it starts to warm you. a new favorite, thanks Scott. kujo9 (1077), North Ridgeville, Ohio, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 15/20 | Nov 12, 2007 12 oz bottle 8/17/07: Very little CO2 released upon pouring... Very thick and syrupy looking. A thing ring of bubbles forms around the top of the beer along the glass. Blackish brown liquid. The sparse head that forms is remeniscent of a Rorschach ink blot! Aromas start as burnt and acrid when chilled on the first whiff. Not quite like burnt coffee and even less pleasant; Chocolate, caramel, chocolate chip cookie dough, toasted nuts hid behind the burnt aromas, but peak out as it warms. Faint perfumey alcohol, moderate bourbon and lightly oaked wood notes. Vanilla gets stronger as it warms and I think I’ve also gotten some faint herbal hops. Flavor starts out acrid, burnt, and bitter the same as it does in the aroma, but thankfully not quite as intense. Chocolate and coffee are more evenly balanced as it warmed. Caramel, toasted malts, vanilla, light bourbon all present and accounted. Some doughy malt aftertaste. Semi dry finish, and the aftertaste is lightly bitter from grains & hops with a lightly burnt coffee flavor. Smooth, creamy texture, well hidden alcohol, fuller body, and lower level of CO2. I was not impressed by the first whiff, but as it warmed it became quite pleasing! I think this will age well if you can somehow hang onto more bottles, but nice now even when young! Nose is smoky with woodiness, lots of aocoholic bourbon. Mouth is woody seaweedy alcohol tones, soky refinery smelly. Finishes a bit coppery, vanilla and long. Alright. chicagodri (1057), Chicago, Illinois, USA
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 3/5 | 17/20 | Mar 8, 2008 From the bottle, pours a thick black with a thin tan head that stays on the outside of your glass as you drink it. The bourbon isn’t as strong as the Goose Island Bourbon County, but it picks up the aroma/flavor well in this beer. The main aroma I think is still of coffee and the vanilla really isn’t noticeable. Great flavor though and it is very easy to drink. Still doesn’t seem like a 10% beer, it goes down so smooth. Very enjoyable.
