Complex aroma - chocolate, vanilla, coffee, bourbon, sweetness, wood - "Im sold" & very impressed. Medium to low carbonation. Smooth, filling, oily, thick. Very light & harmless warmth from alcohol. Really incredible & the best beer Ive had in a long time! Rciesla (3720), Exit 15W, New Jersey, USA

Phenominal as i remember it when i had it in July 07 at founders old location. Black Beer, tan head, diminished coffee and moderate amount of bourbon. Amazing. Bottle version is much less impressive though.
Drinking this again, right now. I love this beer! egajdzis (3629), Spring Mount, Pennsylvania, USA

Taste of more roast, chocolate malts, vanilla beans, nuts, dry wood, and faint bourbon... a touch of alcohol in the finish. badgerben (3605), Blaine, Minnesota, USA

Black color with a thin head. Big coffee and bourbon aroma. The taste screams both coffee and bourbon. Seems like Jack Daniels to me. A little thin, but still excellent. Dry malt finish and plent of roasted barley. Delicious. ClarkVV (3578), Allston, Massachusetts, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 13/20 | Feb 1, 2005 Updated: May 22, 20072005 draught XBF05. Dark black, mostly likely opaque body with a surprisingly decent-sized head for a barrel-aged beer. Sharp notes of brandy soaked prunes, Spanish coffee, Irish coffee, vanilla blossoms. Pretty interesting aroma, all told. Flavor has some sharp alcohol notes, syrupy bourbon, light bakers chocolate and plenty of harsh dryness on the finish. Medium-full flavor, but a bit loose in texture. I keep finding some out-of place syrupiness. And what I loved about the Breakfast stout (lack of astringency and acid/alcohol) really seems to be a problem here. Sharp, bitter and too alcoholic. 7/4/6/3/12 Draught at Redbones, 8/6/06 Stuff only lasted 2 days and I can see why. First sip cold actually produces a perfect breakfast stout flavor up front, with chocolate and lightly dry roastiness following. The bourbon comes on the end, and is at first, quite sharp and apparent, with harsh tannins and vinousness. However, that was only the first sip or two. As it warmed, it actually got to the point where it was only minimally noticeable. Just adding some dryness and another layer of complexity. In short, another one of the few times I’ve had a barrel aged stout done correctly and not dominated by it. Very slick, lightly chewy body on draught with near-perfect carbonation levels. Some vanilla and coffee, with some warm bourbon notes trail off very pleasantly. 7/3/8/5/16. Draught at Redbones on 5/4/07 Hmm, not that this was overly bourbony this time, nor was it too hoppy or messy. But this time, it actually seemed a little bit muted/dull what have you. Somewhat chalky and very roasty, but the brilliant sweetness matched with juicy, fresh hops seems to be gone this year. I’m still impressed that it’s not overdone, but it didnt seem to have much character this batch. Lots of dry chocolate, heavy, dullish roast and probably a lot of neutral barrel tannin accounting for the more lackluster feel/flavor/aroma this time around. Bound to happen as the barrels get used. Score is a rough average of my 3 experiences with it thus far. Dickinsonbeer (3494), Hoboken, New Jersey, USA
| 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 17/20 | Aug 28, 2006 Updated: May 22, 2007Pours a very dark deep thcik black with a deark tan head. Aroma is a perfect blend of the traditional coffee aromas, burnt malts, roastiness, some chocolate and then balanced with lots of bourbon but not too much. Slightly sweet flavor but cut by the harsh acidity of the burnt malts, roasted coffee, bourbon and a fair amount of oak and vanilla. Real nice harsh rich dark malts all the way through and is so damn smooth. Great BA impy stout. Fin (3446), Merton, Oxfordshire, England
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Aug 16, 2009 Bottle at Craig’s bit tasting, Edinburgh, 21-03-09 thanks to Craig for a nice evening and for getting some great beers I’ve finally moved this over after months of Craig telling me that I’d rated this and put in the Founders Breakfast Stout box rather than this one. Pours dark thick oily and a little sticky, yes this is pretty much shark eye black with no real head that I noticed. Some vanilla and bourbon on the nose and very much in evidence in the mouth, also its very roasty. Soft feeling in the mouth, the alcohol leaves a steady warmth around the gums and across the tongue, its good. A really nice stout that finished with a little hoppy flurry. | 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 17/20 | May 26, 2009 Bottle thanks to Daknole poured a nearly opaque black with a lingering ring of brown foam. Aromas of bitter chocolate, coffee, vanilla, roasted malt,m light oak and light bourbon. Palate was medium bodied and smooth with a warming finish. Flavors of bitter chocolate, roasted malt, coffee, light vanilla, light oak and a hint of bourbon with a smooth warming lingering roasty chocolaty finish. A very tasty Impy Stout but I like a little more Bourbon flavor in my Bourbon Barrel Stouts.
