The smell on this one is strong; I set my bottle down, walked away, but could smell it filling up the room. As I pull the glass close to my nose to take a wiff of the air, I notice a ton of smell in there: chocolate, coffee, vanilla, and a presence of alcohol, smell, probably the bourbon barrel aging. The taste is much the same, roasty, coffee, vanilla, chocolate. As I continue to drink, the vanilla and bourbon flavors really start to pull through this beer. This one is a bit sticky, but definetly good. This is excellent, I wish I could get more. Rciesla (3865), Exit 15W, New Jersey, USA

Phenominal as i remember it when i had it in July 07 at founders old location. Black Beer, tan head, diminished coffee and moderate amount of bourbon. Amazing. Bottle version is much less impressive though.
Drinking this again, right now. I love this beer! foundmd (163), Cincinnati, Ohio, USA

Immediate aroma of oak, bourbon, and coffee. You definitely have to love bourbon and (especially) coffee/espresso to appreciate this beer. The coffee flavor is huge, almost more than the regular Breakfast Stout. Initial flavor of bitter coffee with hints of woody oak and bourbon alcohol. The finish is subtle chocolate and vanilla with more coffee bitterness. Let this one warm a bit to enjoy its complexities. Not a lot of roasted malts or hops. Palate is thinner than most Imperials with moderate carbonation. A fantastic and unique beer. Overpriced, but essential nonetheless.
Update: After sitting in the cellar for a few months the coffee aroma and flavor has become much more subtle. A lot more bitter chocolate than there was in my initial tasting. Still wonderful though. savandervelde (3), USA does not count | 4.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 5/5 | 10/10 | 5/5 | 19/20 | Mar 23, 2006 Heroin sans the baggage.

Aroma is roasted, black coffee, burnt toast, vanilla, oak, cherries, bourbon whiskey, chocolate and rum. Flavor is awesome, smoke, cherries, vanilla, milk chocolate, oak, barbeque, brown sugar, dark rum, whiskey, coffee with cream and sugar, and sweet caramel. Heavy, sticky mouthfeel with a surprisingly sweet, thick finish. Awesome, no doubt about it. Might be the best bourbon aged beer made. xav33 (313), Midland, MI, Michigan, USA

12 oz bottle
Bottled 11/05, served with Wheaties 11/06
Medium pour in a large tulip glass.
Poured inky black with an average light brown somewhat lasting head.
Smelt of strong bourbon, dark coffee, toasted oak.
Flavor was upfront bitter charred oak, dark coffee, with light sweet bourbon and bitter sour vegetal soy bean taste, followed by a moderately bitter earth and dark chocolate sweetness on a long oaken finish. Palate was full bodied, creamy, softly carbonated, moderate astringency and alcohol warmth.
Overall, the explosion of flavors begs for another sip, and another bottle... Englander1986 (51), Middlesbrough, England
