gorditoabd (162), San Diego, California, USA Nov 4, 2009 12 oz bottle.Pours dark oily black with a mountain of tan head that is built to last. Nose is all roasted malts and brown sugar. Flavor is dark, rich, and smooth - chocolate and smoke, with just a touch of cinnamon lightening at the end. Really interesting spriteliness to this porter, balancing the bitterness until the finish. Nice job Founders darn1207 (528), Tallahassee, Florida, USA Nov 1, 2009 12oz bottle from Charleston Beer Exchange. black pour with a finger sturdy looking tan head that disappears quicker than I would’ve expected. soft but strong aroma of coffee, roasted malts, chocolate and some earthy spiced hops. taste is fairly sharp candy sweetness backed up by a chalky bitterness. the caramel, coffee, roastiness comes through in the finish. nothing over the top here - just an all around great porter. NayTron (28), Kalamazoo, Michigan, USA Oct 31, 2009 Pours dark and oily. Big smells of roasted malts, bitter chocolate and sugar. Taste is smokey, smooth, thick and so good. Not a real porter guy but this changed my mind. Nice job. luv2brew (177), Chesterfield, Virginia, USA Oct 31, 2009 This is about as good as it gets. Rich, Dark, malty with a chewiness that really is in the mix with some of the best robust porters on the market. The chocolatiness slightly overpowers the grainy burntess, and the aggressive bitterness is on the back end. Just a top notch beer. JohnnyJ (1282), Carlsbad, California, USA Oct 30, 2009 This was a very nice porter. Roasted malt, smoke, milk chocolate, roasted coffee, and licorice. Nice silky mouthfeel. Tasty! meisterbrauMHB (53), Waukesha, Wisconsin, USA Oct 29, 2009 Pours a rich, dark brown with a generous head. Rich, smokey taste gives way to more complex malt flavors. Has a hint of cherry and coffee notes. Finishes well. chicagodri (1021), Chicago, Illinois, USA Oct 29, 2009 Also another beer I was shocked I hadn’t yet rated. Pour black with a tan head. Aroma of roasted malt, chocolate, touch of coffee. Great flavor of chocolate and roasted malt. Solid Porter. bsp77 (191), Minnesota, USA Oct 29, 2009 Poured from bottle into Nonic Imperial Pint.
Pure black (the blackest Porter I have ever seen), with very thin tan head and just a touch of lacing.
The aroma is chocolate galore, with some licorice, roasted malt and coffee.
Very chocolaty and rich. Noticeable licorice and maybe some fruitiness. Somewhat bitter finish, seems to be more from roasted malts than hops.
Exceedingly smooth full body, slightly chewy, low carbonation (almost flat). Love the smoothness, but not the flatness.
Despite the richness of the beer, it is quite easy to sip. Delectable.
The body definitely seems more like a Stout, but I guess the lower levels of roasted barley keeps things in Porter territory. Kind of a hybrid, as if there wasn’t enough confusion between Porters and Stouts already.
