Moderate tan head, but it lasts. Leaves generous lace on the glass. So dark (brown, near black), I could not see any light shine through. Chalky, chocolate milk aroma. Light bitterness in the background. My first impression is "rustic". There’s a little bit of everything here without the smoothness of a well-blended brew. I like that. Lots of hop finish that does blend nicely with bitter black patent malt. Good body, almost chewy, but lots of balancing carbonation. A complex porter, worthy of each sip while wondering each nuance of flavor. Another winner from the guys at Founders.

Bottle courtesy of stfun. Pours brown with a huge brown head. Smells of chocolate, cocoa, metallic hints. Tastes creamy and chocolatey with a rich chocolate finish. Great beer!

12 oz. bottle poured to a Czech pils glass, presenting a dark, black/brown hue with some ruby tones as the glass was raised. The head was a foamy dark tan but reduced quickly to a thin layer with a fair ring of lacing. The aroma was roasty malt, chocolate, and to a lesser degree, some coffee notes. The flavor was these plus a touch of caramel, more defined chocolate as baker’s variety, and a hint of smoke, resulting in a firm but mellow bitterness that remained the same to the finish. A very tasty, full bodied, creamy to the tongue, porter.

Pours almost black with a very thin tan head. Aroma is coffee up front followed by chocolate, and plenty of great roasted malts. Taste is coffee, milk chocolate, nuttiness, with a hop presence.

On tap at the brewpub. Opaque black with small burnt tan head. Nice dirty chocolate, cold coffee, dry bakers chocolate, nice. Big cold coffee flavor with dry roast, a little milk chocolate, a little smoke, tasty. Medium to full, creamy body. Nice and dry with excelent coffee/roast characteristics.

Bottle. Bottled: 03/31/09. Jet-black pour with a very thin chestnut head. Rich, chocolate cake-like aroma with tons of cocoa, roasty coffee, toasty malts, vanilla, some caramel, and brown sugar. Medium to full-bodied and fairly smooth. Lots of caramel and semi-sweet chocolate start things off taste-wise. Cocoa and toasty malts follow. Finishes with a roasty black coffee bitterness and burnt sugary malty flavors. Very solid porter.
