Dark roasted coffee, smoke, sweet malt, bright, bitter and sour all at the same time. Kind of a paradox in a bottle. Well balanced, easy drinking and complex all at the same time.

Pours with an inch of gray/brown head which dissipates quickly leaving a decent amount of lacing. Aroma is of dark coffee. Taste is of hard core coffee and chocolate. Kinda that taste of over roasted Starbucks coffee. Chocolate is also very prevalent. Mouthfeel is very thick, almost bordering on a stout (but hey, what’s the difference). Overall, this really is the stepson of Founders Breakfast stout, but without the chocolate flavor. I very much liked this beer although it was on the thick side for a porter. The flavor was also too biased towards coffee and without any other flavors. I would happily drink again. bhensonb (4271), Woodland, California, USA

Full bodied with mildly creamy carbonation. Flavors of chocolate, hazel nuts, and vanilla? Neither sweet nor bitter. Really good finish of coffee/chocolate. Quite tasty. Stouts and Porters are my favorite types though. Full bodied porter with smoky flavor and somewhat dry with a nice but not overwhelming bitterness to it. Very nice dark color. A great beer overall and now I can’t wait to taste the Founder’s Breakfast Stout this weekend and find out what all the raving is about. ghawener (960), San Salvador, El Salvador

Rich aroma of roasted barley cocoa powder and espresso. Bitter dark chocolate with undertones of licorice, and roasted coffee flavors. Full bodied with a smooth and creamy texture. Very well done. | 2.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 4/5 | 12/20 | Nov 24, 2009 This porter is highly rated on this site but I’ve tasted far better porters. This ale is too roasted, too bitter, too metallic. The overly roasted malts dont allow for the smoothness or sweetness of superior porters like Samual Smith’s Taddy Porter.
