A fluffy, dense, off white head fills the glass and leaves a bunch of sheets of lace. This is a pretty beer to look at. Aroma is dense, thick, syrupy, intense hops. Very strong hop aroma. Up there with a strong IPA in terms of hop aroma. Reminds me of a DFH 90 or PP Hop 15, though obviously less intense. Very grassy. Something reminds me of a farm in the aroma in a completely different way than a lambic would remind me of a farm. Hay? Just the grass? I think it’s the rye actually, which is quite noticeable. Underneath the thick hops is a very noticeable malt background. Taste is hoppy, bitter, slightly spicy. Balanced and pretty complex. Cannot detect much rye in the taste. Hoppy aftertaste that lasts for awhile, so much so that when I burp half an hour after my last sip I get a pleasant reminder of my previous beverage. Easier to drink than the aroma would lead you to believe. This is not my favorite style but I have to say that this is extremely well made and I am impressed anyways. Good stuff. | 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Aug 9, 2007 On tap at Three Floyds Brewpub, and served in a pint glass. This beer poured a dark amber color with a thick, creamy looking tan head that slowy faded away. Some thick, chunky lacing was left on the sides of the glass. The aroma was made up of sweet caramel along with some strong citrus hop notes. A touch of rye malt was also present. The flavor was very robust with a good amount of malt showing up right away, then finishing with a lasting piney bitterness. The mouthfeel was medium to full-bodied with minimal carbonation and some light warming alcohol. Very tasty. I can’t wait to have some more of this! Acknud (772), Morganfield, Kentucky, USA
| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Aug 7, 2007 Drank from a Pilsner. Murky red color with 2 fingers of fluffy light tan head. Pine aroma. Slightly sweet with peppery bitter bite and long lasting bitter aftertaste. I will drink this again. Jmichael (633), Asheville, North Carolina, USA
| 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 4/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Aug 7, 2007 poured into tulip. pours a semi clear dark amber with high frothy off white head. I had to pour and wait several times b/c of this immense head.. rye malty with some alchohol presence on the aroma. a slight fizzy palate, with a dry finish. a sweet front to an alchohol finish. I loved the black rye so I was really looking forward to this, but it left me dissapointed b/c it was soo hot, too much alchohol on the taste, reminded me of a strong barly wine, but the percentage should not conotate that? it was ok, but hard to get past, complex yes, but very strong alchohol taste, maybe some sitting will do it justice. | 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Aug 3, 2007 draft. An excellent beer delivering a spicy rye kick without giving up balance. Nice malt and hop character in the nose and throughout. Gregis (1132), Shawnee, Kansas, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Jul 14, 2007 Pours a flat copper with a creamy, off-white head. The nose is of candy-sweet caramel malts and both pine and citrus hops. The mouthfeel is medium-bodied and slick with a nice dry and bitter finish. Sweet caramel malts front the flavor with a light rye blended into the mix. Citrus and pine hops lead to a nice bitter conclusion, and a pleasantly dry and bitter aftertaste stick around for a while after the swallow. This is a very good beer.
