Dark red-brown with a medium beige head. Aroma of caramel malts, rye, and spicy hops. The flavor has rich and spicy malts with a nice spicy and floral hop balance leading to a medium-bitter finish and some light lingering sweetness. A robust and flavorful ale with complex and interesting flavors. This is just what I needed after a slew of west coast IPAs in the last few days. joeycapps (1466), Waterdown, Ontario, Canada
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Apr 12, 2005 Translucent red-amber w/ light brown foam. Big, grapefruit & pine nose w/ hints of caramel, biscuits & rye bread. Moderately sticky feel. Sweet caramel malt foundation supports a very hoppy, citrusy, spicy flavour. Long, very bitter finish. | 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Jun 13, 2006 Hazy auburn red with a moderate, light tan head that slowly dissolves into a thin layer. The aroma is hoppy, slightly sweet and intriguingly spicy. Pine, grapefruit, caramel, some whole grains, dry bread and some serious, succulent malty sweetness. The body is smooth and creamy with mild carbonation. The flavor has more elements of nice balance: sweet malt and bitter hops are both equally present. The hops seem to last a little longer as it is carried on the mild but warming alcohol on the finish. This is dangerous at almost 7% because its so drinkable. Maybe my favorite Founder’s offering yet... adrian910ss (1436), philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA

This is a very interesting and complex beer brewed with difficult grain. Everyone should try this. It has great hoppy characteristics furthered by the interesting characteristics you can really only find in rye beers. Try it out! OldGrowth (1434), North Carolina, USA

| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Feb 26, 2009 Bottle. Aroma of perfumy and tropical fruit hops, brown sugar, fresh rye, caramel malt. Flavor of sweet, rye malt with spicy accents and a good heap of bitterness. Lots of sweetness from the rye, but the bitterness hangs on right through to the finish. Really nice all around.
