Pours a deep amber with a fizzy light-tan head. Strong aroma of good hops, clean and refreshing. Taste is dominated by a strong hop character with a mellow, though not very sweet, backbone. Tasty and hoppy. Reminds me a little of Hop Rod Rye, though I think that was a slightly better beer. This is pretty damn good though. redlem (1155), Illinois, USA
| 4.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 18/20 | Jun 19, 2007 Updated: Mar 15, 2009This was a surprise. The old guy with glasses just staring at you daring you to drink this and you thinking " what you got geezer!" What he’s got lurking in this small bottle is a world of complexity just waiting to put a boot upside your head. Unlike the black the rye is a focus in this and all its wonderful spiciness can come out and blend well with the rich caramel malts. The hops only add to the richness, never do they compromise the balance. The mouthfeel is full and chewy with a lingering aftertaste. Nice. ericandersnavy (1141), crossroads, Texas, USA

The first beer since my wisdom teeth were extracted… man, I’ve been craving a nice brew! Pours a rich amber body and a tall dense khaki head. The aroma is enticingly wild; unlike the old guy with the glasses on the label. Suggestions of toffee and caramel are gently pushed aside by mentions of pine resin and spicy citric hops. Guava, grapefruit, cumquat, brown sugar covered oatmeal and rosemary all come to reference here. The palate is sticky and viscous, the perfect level of light carbonation for me. A very lovely beer... I so wish this were available locally! DrBayern (1137), Morehead City, North Carolina, USA

Clear copper body under a frothy off white head with good retention and lace. Aroama is spicy, citrusy, and floral over a backdrop of caramel. Medium body and a certain degree of oily resin on the palate. A long and dry finish started off by a spicy bitterness follows and early malty sweetness. piscator34 (1136), Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Aug 16, 2009 Bottled sample shared with oakbluff. Amber in colour with moderate carbonation. Aromas are of citrus fruit, apricot, and spicy rye malts. More citrus and spicy rye in the mouth, along with notes of caramel and a unique soapy note that added a nice level of complexity. Medium bodied and very drinkable. I’ll be seeking out more of this beer for sure. Gregis (1136), Shawnee, Kansas, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Jul 14, 2007 Pours a flat copper with a creamy, off-white head. The nose is of candy-sweet caramel malts and both pine and citrus hops. The mouthfeel is medium-bodied and slick with a nice dry and bitter finish. Sweet caramel malts front the flavor with a light rye blended into the mix. Citrus and pine hops lead to a nice bitter conclusion, and a pleasantly dry and bitter aftertaste stick around for a while after the swallow. This is a very good beer. alexsdad06 (1133), Ohio, USA

The decent size beige head is mostly lasting. Aroma is caramel with pine and citrus hops. Flavor begins with sweet malts but finishes with a well balanced bitterness from the pine/citrus hops. medium bodied. The finish is rather dry. I enjoyed this one quite a bit.
