Nice grapefruit citrus nose going on here. Flavor is kind of bready with a slight bitter finish. Also some rye flavor in the finish. The flavors all seem to meld together well here. Very enjoyable and simple almost session like qualities, although now I see it’s just under 7%. Well, the alcohol is well hidden so it tastes like a session anyway. nimbleprop (951), SouthWest, Washington, Washington DC, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Apr 22, 2008 Pours a translucent, nearly opaque, cloudy, ruby red with a thin slightly off white head. Aroma is very spicy, malty, grainy and slightly citrus with a sort of sweet and sour thing going on. Flavor is very grainy and chewy, with some mild sweetness, plenty of spice, some citrus. Heavy mouthfeel but smooth and crisp on the palate. Rockinout (946), Kent, Ohio, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Jan 10, 2005 A nice looking orange-red color with citrus(grapefruit) hops all over it. The rye adds a new dimension, one that I like, hence the extra overall point. Nice to drink 3 or 4 or 5 of them! BeerBelcher (945), Columbus, Ohio, USA
| 5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 10/10 | 5/5 | 10/10 | 5/5 | 20/20 | Oct 15, 2006 Updated: Jun 6, 2007I don’t usually buy multi-packs of craft beer...usually I buy single-serve bottles, or I buy at stores where I can mix-and-match my own six-packs. That said, I’m on my third six pack of Red Rye in the past few months. I had the good fortune to attend GABF this year, and spent a lot of time unsuccessfully searching for rye beers that are its equal (Hebew Rye PA is also very good). Great Lakes Nosferatu is also reminiscent of this beer, but I like Red Rye better.
Appearance is a deep-red with attractive white lacing. Aroma is pleasant hop odor with a significant prediction on the citrus flavors to come. Flavor is great - hop heavy, citrusy, the rye delivers big-boy malt flavor, yet Red Rye is well-balanced.
I have a hard time finding fault with this beer (it is even a good value for craft beer); I will be drinking this for as long as they’re making it. I can’t think of a beer I’d recommend more highly. jtw (944), farmington, Michigan, USA
