Cloudy reddish amber color with an insanely big blonde head that has staying power. Very strong rye flavor with a citrusy hops mixed in. Nice blending - the hops and rye mingle nicely. | 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Oct 27, 2007 A good hop aroma, herbal and some pine. Balanced by sweet malt, and more hops in the flavor. This beer could probably fit in the American pale ale category. Copper color and well carbonated. BMan1113VR (2943), Los Angeles (and Dallas), Texas, USA

Grat lacing. Aroma of malts, currants, some caramel and rye. Taste is sweet and malty with a nice hop bite. Tastes like an imperial red but with less alcohol. Lively bubbles. Great beer. beerbuzzmontreal (2925), Montreal, Quebec, Canada

| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Jan 15, 2005 Sampled at From The Vine beer tasting Jan 14th, 2005: Two beers in a row that exceeded expectations. This beer is a light amber color with a medium thin off-white head and minimal lacing. Rye is prevalent in the nose, along with some hops and caramel. Medium-bodied with a blast of citrus and floral hops flavor. Rye and grain is much more understated than in the aroma and it works well. The finish is lightly sweet with a touch of spice. Well-done. | 4.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 19/20 | May 3, 2007 Cloudy orange-copper body topped by an initially large beige head leaving lots of lacings. Aroma is a fruity hop-soup. Intense. Full and slightly oily body with tasty rye malts. Copiously hopped with a resulting complex hop taste. Far from the uni-dimensional pine-tree or citrus hop profile. The end result is hard-hitting, harsh, fruity but dry. Dry berries and shredded hop-cones. Harsh assertive bitterness. I don’t care about the Speciality Grain style on ratebeer. This is an IPA to me. And it may very well be my favourite non-imperial (<7%) hop-fix. Hence the ridiculously high rating. Draft in Boston it was unreal. Bottle is still great. I’m a huge fan of a generous c-hopping of a solid rye-based body (Bear Republic Hop Rod Rye Ale is another example). But honestly I can’t express the taste and/or I can’t relate it to known flavours. I just don’t have the words to describe it. Well, I have the words but they are woooa, hmmmm, hhhhaaaaaaa but I don’t think these are very useful in a rating. DougShoemaker (2856), Toronto, Canada
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Apr 9, 2005 Aroma of strong citrus and pine, orange/amber, pours a small custard head. Flavour is layered with good hops and then fine malt. Nicely balanced, medium bodied. A terrific beer, that in a blind tasting I’d think was an IPA?

| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 15/20 | May 27, 2006 12-oz. Thanks to BitBucket for the trade. Unalloyed generosity on his part for this round, without a doubt. Pours coppery brown, and fairly opaque at that. Glows copper against the light. The nose is just amazing on this beer. Sour sharp rye with some piney hop dissonance...definitely a perfect match. The attack is crisp, and that’s bulwarked by a nice bubbly mouthfeel that sits between raw and fizz. The finish is quite dry and bitter, though not exceptionally so for the style. Rich nutty rye sourness permeates the flavor as well as the aroma. Really great, drinkable stuff--this beer should probably not be served by the pitcher if I have to drive.
