Deep amber-orange pour with initial two inch head that settles into a thinness with great lacing. Noticed a very piney, floral nose right away...and not much else, which is fine by me. Flavor is hops right up front (POW!) with that great rye to tone it down a bit near the finish. Finish is dry and bitter...just lovely. Thanks kryptic...loved this. | 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Jan 17, 2005 Updated: Jul 25, 2006You guessed it, this beer pours red. A nice shade of red too. Small white head quickly diminishes. There’s a real hop/malt combo happening in the aroma. Fresh squeezed orange dominates with subtle hints of pine and grapefruit rind. This combo carries over in the flavor - grapefuit and other sour fuit are evident. The finish is smooth - and leaves you with a hint of lemon. Nice drinkability and just really solid all the way around. Indy (87), Hopkins, Minnesota, USA
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | May 2, 2006 Bottle. Fantastic. Hazy deep red/copper pour with thin white head...lots of "floaties". Aroma is spicy/fruity/piney hop goodness with hints of toasted malts. Flavor is great...crisp and dry, complex malts, well balanced overall with a nice hop bite finish. This is the first Founders beer I’ve had, and I’m impressed. This had much more in the way of hop character than many so-called "IPA’s" that Ik’ve had lately. I wish I had another one... :( OldMrCrow (1200), Seattle, Washington, USA
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Apr 11, 2008 Bottle, a bonus from pabobcat---man I’m glad I got to try this one. Thank you!
Pours a beautiful deep copper with a nice light-tan head. Great looking beer. And a splendid aroma as well: malts balancing well against deep robust hops that blend sweet citrus and plenty of resin, rich caramel notes coming through strong, ample spiciness from the rye. The flavor comes very close but doesn’t quite match the previous two. Plenty of malted rye driving this one, and points for the distinctive contributions from the yeast. Piney hops dance all around, strong and notable but never overbalancing the rye and other malts. If I were to complain about anything, it comes of just a notch to bready and just a notch underhopped to take it to the highest of planes. Must of that may have to do with the bottled condition of this one, I can speculate that fresh on cask or even draft would be absolutely divine. I’m now ISO this on tap or cask next time I visit Michigan. I’m tossing in a point to overall based on potential, but I suspect even that leaves me with a conservative 4.2.
I can see why this went so far in the recent DIPAC bracket. It’s excellent! This is another one of those "why I love beer" beers. beervana (781), Libertyville, Illinois, USA

Hazy red hued rye ale having a small white head. Nice fruity/hoppy aroma. Medium-to-full bodied ale that starts with light malt sweetness and spicy/fruity/toffee/hop flavors. Finishes dry with lingering hop (grapefruit) flavor and bitterness. Well balanced. Delicious giant beer. | 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Feb 15, 2009 Updated: Jun 18, 200912oz bottle. Beautiful amber-red pour with a thick creamy head. Aroma of hops with lots of grapefruit, apricot, some malt sweetness and pine. The grapefruit comes through in the flavor as well, along with bitter hops, sweet malts, and a pinch of rye spiciness. Palate is medium bodied and thin. Easy to drink and refreshing. Although the alcohol might be a little high, this would make a nice session beer. Another excellent beer from Founders. chicagobears (336), Elk Grove Village, Illinois, USA
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Jun 15, 2007 Pours a brownish red. Nice color accented with a beige fluffy head. The aroma is a extravaganza. Starts off with a big hop blast that gets rounded out with smooth malted rye.
After this I notice a dry spiciness that lingers. The rye is a unique blend that gives a long almost smoked finish. Love it.
