Reddish hue with an off white head that lingers nicely. Good lacing. Aroma of citrusy hops and a hint of rye. Initial taste is dominated by hops, but as it goes to back of the mouth, I pick up the rye with sweet hints of berry, malt, and spice. Finish is semi- dry, hoppy, and I picked up a a subtle flavor of candy red hots. Hoppiness lingers at the back of the mouth. This stuff is great and always consistent, and is probably one of my favorite session beers. I always pick up a six when I am in a town that carries this line. 17thfloor (1481), Chicago, Illinois, USA
| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Oct 11, 2007 Updated: Mar 22, 2008[Re-rate 3/22/08] Gorgeous brownish red pour, some small bubbles, and the largest creamiest beige fluffy head ever (bigger and thicker than most rootbeer floats - 54F). Lots of yeast settles at the bottom once the head dissipates. Very pungent malted rye aroma, slightly vinous and sweet with a touch of hops. Palate is great for the amount of malts, not overly sticky and the carbonation isnt annoying, however its a little thin. Slightly vinous from the rye with some great crisp bitter hops. Lots of yeast in the finish. The malted rye really adds a mellowing characteristic, that is no-doubt more noticeable from the past 5 months of aging. I don’t know if its better now, but it is quite different. Probably oxidized a bit, which isn’t really a bad thing with this rye beer... especially if you like rye whiskey. xav33 (313), Midland, MI, Michigan, USA

12 oz bottle
Medium pour in a shaker
Recent brewing (Winter ’07?), blushed 04/07
Poured a murky ruddy brown with a large rocky mostly to fully lasting light brown head with fair lacing.
Smelt of strong caramel and grapefruit.
Taste was upfront strong bitter spruce and grapefruit rind with light sweet citrus and caramel followed by a harsh bitter spruce and leafy on a long finish.
Palate was light to medium bodied, oily, lively carbonated and strongly astringent.
Overall, a ballsy amber with lots of hops flavoring. Duster72 (117), Indianapolis, Indiana, USA

Huge tan head with brown speckles takes several minutes to subside. Looks like the top of a root beer float. Head leaves moderate lacing. Aroma is sweet rye. Taste is rye with sweet citrus hops and carmel malts. HInt of bitter at the end. Mouthfeel is smooth and creamy. Very drinkable. Will buy more of these next time. Excellent beer! joe1510 (501), Illinois, USA

Red’s Rye poured a hazy red/amber. With a big 2 finger rocky off-white head. The head sticks around on this beer throughout the glass. Leaves sticky lacing the whole way through.
Smells of grapefruit hops and rye bread with a little sweet malt. The smell is great on this beer. It makes my mouth water.
The taste is very good. Grapefruit up front followed by a touch of rye. Ends with a lingering bitterness that makes you want another drink. Very good flavor.
Mouthfeel is good as well. A little thicker, coats the mouth. A nice carbonation.
I could drink a whole lot of these. Founders did a great job. Every drink keeps me wanting another.

| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Mar 26, 2009 bottle. Poured into a Delirium snifter... really nice appearance... dark red with a decent size off white head. Wonderful floral hop aroma with a touch of rye. I didn’t really know what to expect from this one, but it really is a pleasure to drink. The body is pretty full with a huge hop presence up front as well as through the finish. The dry hopping really shines through on the tip of the tongue at the finish. There is some definite rye over the top of the palate as well with some lighter fruits and citrus notes towards the bottom. Excellent finish - nice and bitter with some spice and rye up front that give it a bit of a kick. True quality here. zizzybalubba (373), Elizabeth City, North Carolina, USA
| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 17/20 | Apr 25, 2009 12 oz. bottle from Sam’s Quik Shop. Pours reddish-orange with an off-white head. Aroma of grapefruit, light piney hops, and caramel sweetness. Bitter grapefruit flavor wtih a piney finish. Great balance of sweetness. More or less a pale ale but the rye gives for an interesting dimension not typically found in pale ales or IPAs. A wonderful beer.
