mrjames (21), Clinton Twp, Michigan, USA May 1, 2007 12 oz bottle. Strong hop flavor and aroma. Delicious beer but not well balanced and certainly not for those who do not like hops TomDecapolis (3122), Skippack, Pennsylvania, USA Apr 30, 2007 Pours a lightly hazy ruby red amber with a large foamy/creamy off white lacing head. Great looking beer! Aroma is a bouquet of hops with orange, pine, floral notes, caramel and hints of rye. Flavor of citrus, caramel, grapefruit, piney, toffee, nice rye notes, dry and a very nice balance of hop bitterness and malty sweetness. One excellent beer! ex (8), USA does not count Apr 25, 2007 On tap at brewery; Pleasing color, nice head, gentle aroma. Surprisingly strong hop taste. Personally I would prefer fewer hops in a red of this variety but this is what the brewery is known for. Still, I was left thinking that the strong hopping overpowers the rest of what this brew could offer. A nice drink for those that love a strong hopped brew. mkofron (155), St. Louis, Missouri, USA Apr 24, 2007 Copper colored in appearance.. Poured from a 12oz bottle.. thick tan head. Hops on rye bread sandwich. Too much for my taste buds. kkearn (993), Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA Apr 24, 2007 Bottle. Hazy red-amber with a thik tan head that fills the pint glass. Aroma primarily citrus, with some toffee, earth, and rye. Citric hop flavor at first with sweet malt joining in later. The rye is most evident towards the finish, and works incredibly well. Long, bitter finish. Delicious. BleacherBum (176), Blowing Rock, North Carolina, USA Apr 24, 2007 Dark amber color. Quickly disapating light tan head. Aroma is of big hops, rye grains, caramel and light citrus. Lots of caramel and grain in the flavor. Earthy tones and biscuit are big in here as well. Nice dark fruits and hops coming in at the end. Great malt/hop balance. Sticky mouthfeel. Medium carbonation. A fantastic beer. The rye really makes for a nice earthy, bitter and dry finish. Wish this was readily available in my area. Jvittorio4187 (255), Boardman, Ohio, USA Apr 22, 2007 Pours a light red. Didn’t have enough time to judge the head. Crisp taste with an aparent hop note. Didn’t get the spicy finish. Almost like the beer was erased. xav33 (313), Midland, MI, Michigan, USA Apr 21, 2007 Founders Red’s Rye
12 oz bottle
Medium pour in a shaker
Recent brewing (Winter ’07?), blushed 04/07
Poured a murky ruddy brown with a large rocky mostly to fully lasting light brown head with fair lacing.
Smelt of strong caramel and grapefruit.
Taste was upfront strong bitter spruce and grapefruit rind with light sweet citrus and caramel followed by a harsh bitter spruce and leafy on a long finish.
Palate was light to medium bodied, oily, lively carbonated and strongly astringent.
Overall, a ballsy amber with lots of hops flavoring.
