The best thing about the whole trip is the great beer they serve at The Monarch. It’s hard to describe how good this beer is. Great aroma and taste.I have only had it on tap and it is excellent. I am not sure I am rating the correct brew because they had summer ale sticker on tapper with Fountain Brew.

May 30, 2007 Interesting story and sense that it might be a different kind of beer than commonly found. Rich golden color, average head. Subtle grape and cat litter flavor. Dry, with a nice hop touch. Overall, more subtle than many standard lagers today. Interesting.

May 7, 2007 Thanks to Skyview for sharing a bottle. A dark gold color. Surprisingly clean, I expected something a little rougher with more character. This is a decent lager but just a touch of extra malt. Some corn in the flavor, a little malt. Very clean and it seems filtered as well. I wonder if this is really what beer was like 70 years ago. May 1, 2007 On tap at the Monarch Tavern during a brew tour with Skyview. A pale amber with quickly dissapating white head. Faint corn and malt aroma with a nice corn flavor. Phenomenal for a lager.

Apr 30, 2007 Stopped at the Monarch Tavern in Fountain City during Wisconsin Trip #3. The tavern has this beer both on tap and in 12-oz bottles. Pours a clear golden amber with a white head that dissolves fast and leaves behind a fine white film coating. Very good lacing on glass side. Aroma is sweet, light malt with a touch of sweet corn. Good balance of malt and hops. Taste has a medium body with a smooth carbonation. Thought this is listed as a "Premium Lager" category, this is more of an American Lager. This is one of the better American Lagers I’ve tried. Note of interest, this beer will be brewed by Viking Brewing in Dallas soon. Anxious to try the Viking version.

Oct 15, 2005 Draught sample at Fountain City Brewing Co. in Fountain City, WI. Clear amber-gold with a decent touch of head remaining...light sweet malty nose, seems to carry a bit of corn sugar...smooth, clean malty body, touch of hops late, fairly dry finish...just to bit too watery at the end to be really good.

Jul 28, 2005 In the bottle from the Monarch Tavern. Pours a rich golden color of straw. Head was enormous and pillowy upon first pour, but rapidly settled to a thin white coating that lingers with the beer. Delightful mild fragrance of fresh mown hay. Great balance between hoppy mid bitterness and malt coating. Medium body and carbonation. If this is indeed what average beer tasted like in the pre-prohibition days, then fire up my Way-Back Machine, Mr. Peabody!
